8.A. - Page 319
Statement on Fin er Avenue Aesthatics
I am a Finger Avenue resident or neighbor,wo walks, bicyaIes or otlerwise enjoys the
Finger Avenue streetscape. I have seen the pJs for the McGowan nine-loi deelopineni, and
conctude tlaat it will substaniially degrade tle existingvisual character and yuality af the site
and its suraundings.
What is irnportant assthetically abaut my neighborhood is the serri-rnral character af the
nortt side of Finger Avenue, with many hoxnes set far back from te street. The appearance of
large anlounts of open space with mature, otd growthes, provides a striking ackdrop to
the homes. The contrast between the north side of Finger Avenue and its soutlt side, with its
many quaint, early 20`century bungalows and coitages, is something that's trnique ta
Redwood.City and treasured by its residents.
Examples of how the Finger Avenue Project significantly degrades the aesthetics of our
neighborhood are:
Constrraction of two hvmesith wide two-story facades set back tie minimum
a2lowabe distance'rom the street, Tlere are no hoUSes that large set that clase to the
street anywliere in aur neighborhoad. "
• Nowhere else on Finger Avenae are homes tlYis laige placed on lots this small.
• All of the homes are af simila•size and a1l two-story, as opposed io the tnix of liome
sizes and heights that are representative of ihe north sde of Finger Avenue.
Most of these nine homes wilY be viewable from the public street. There is little open
space and tle homes are only set back a small distance fi•om the narrow that serves
them (some from 3ft—6$from the alleyway.) Nowhcre in our neighborhood are
hauses situated in this fashion,
A deveopment tliis densey packed is incompatible with the ptesence of lae rnatvre
trees on the site. The eventual loss af these trees wilI be irreetsibe.
• The breakup of the north side of Finger Ave, by creating two new interse.tions. The
natow alleyway built far te development fails to integrate with Finger Aenue by not
laaving a sidewalk or planting strip against the roadway.
• Tne one-way aleyway wil reyuire street signs on Finger Ae ta direct t'affc, further
campibmising the chaacter of theorth side of ihe streei.
The a+eraJmass and scale of this deeopment is completely out ofplaGe in our
neighbarhood, out of character for the north side of FingerAvene and it will only lead to
fiuther degadsti ls"uniyue clieracter an a2ity of ow'street.
N ,/ '(/ " t-..
 .
Address l n/ ve Date j/( / Z
,
