8.A. - Page 340 5fatement on Fitz�erAvenueAesthetics I am a Fingei•Avenuc resident ar neighbor, who walks,bicycles ox otherwise en,j�ys the Finger A��enue streetscape, T have seen the plans far the McGoWan nine-lot development, and conclude that it will substantial�y degrade the existing visraal cf�aracter and quality of the site and its surroundangs. What is impoltant aesthetically about my neighborhood is the semi-iural character of the north side of Finger Avenue, witli many homes set fa�•hack from the street.The appearance oF large amounts of open space witli matw•e,old growth trees,pro�i�es a striking backdrap to the homes. The contrasf between the north side of Finger A��enue and its souti�side, with its many quaint, early 20th century bungalows and cottages, is something tha.t's uniq�ae to Redwood City and#reasured by its residents, Exantples of how tlie Finger Avenue Project significantly degrades the aesthetics of our neighborhood are: • Construction of two homes witi�wide two-story Facades set�ack the minimur►� allowable distancc fi•om the street.Tliere are na howses that large set that clase to the street anywhere in our neighborhood. ' • Nowhere else on Finger Ar�enue are homes this large placed on lots this small. • All of the homes are af similar size and all two-story, as opposed to the mix of hame sizes and lteights tZiat a��e representative of the north side of Finger At�enue. • Most of these nine homes will be viewabie from tk�e public street.There is littie open space and the 1�ornes are only set back a small distance from the narrow that serves them(some fi•om 3ft—6ft from the alleyway.) Nowhere in our neighborf�ood are hauses situated in,this fashivn. • A developrrtent this denseiy packed is incompatible with the presence of large mature trees on tha site. Th�sventual loss of t�iese t�•ees wilt be irreversibls. • The breakup of the noi�th side of Fingex Ave, by creating two new intersections.The narrow al�eyway 6ui�t for the devel�pment fails to integrate with Finger Avenue 6y not having a sidewalk or planting st�Yp against tl�e roadway. • The one-way alleyway will require sti�eet signs on Fiz�ger Ave to direct traffic, further compromisang the character af the north side of the ska�et. The overalI mass and scaie of this development is completely aut of place in our neighborhood, out of character for the noa-th side of Finger Avenue and it will anly lead to further degradation of the unique character and quality of our street.
