5. SPECIAL ORDER(S) OF THE DAY <br /> A. Presentation: Awards for Hometown Holiday Parade and Tree <br /> Decorating Contest— Nancy Radcliffe, Janet Borgens, and Jerry Pierce, <br /> Downtown Business Group <br /> Ms. Radcliffe and Ms. Borgens presented the various awards and thanked all the <br /> participants (presentation on file). Students from John Gill School performed for the <br /> City Council and the audience. Council Member Pierce noted that Mr. Pierce was <br /> unable to be present tonight, but that he had prepared the presentation (on file). The <br /> winners under each Tree Decorating category are listed below: <br /> First Place Business Category 2011 - Sequoia Hospital <br /> Second Place Tie - Business Category 2011 —AAA and See's Candies <br /> First Place Youth/School Category 2011 - Redwood City Girl Scouts <br /> Second Place Youth/School Category 2011 - Marine Science Institute <br /> First Place Community Category 2011 - Bay Area Birth Information Center <br /> Second Place Community Category 2011 - Relay for Life <br /> Window Decorating Contest Winners: Sequoia Building, Talk of Broadway, Yokohama <br /> Restaurant, Redwood General Tire, State Farm, and Alisan Andrews & Sequoia <br /> Students. <br /> Mayor Aguirre thanked the Downtown Business Group, Nancy, Barbara and Jerry and <br /> the students of John Gill School as well as the teachers in the audience. Council <br /> Member Foust acknowledged Nina and Keith Kadera for their contributions to the <br /> Hometown Holidays. <br /> B. Update on City's Environmental Initiatives - Robert B. Bell, City <br /> Manager <br /> Dr. Bell provided the presentation (presentation on file) which covered environmental <br /> initiatives, grants received, water conservation efforts, and metrics to measure <br /> programs success and impacts. He tied this back to City Council's strategies; and, he <br /> said that while this comes out of the City Manager's Department, there are other <br /> departments involved. Other presenters included Mr. Mike Gibbons, Ms. Vicki Sherman <br /> and Mr. Justin Ezell. Dr. Bell covered next steps which included a potential ban on <br /> Styrofoam. The City Council was appreciative of the thoroughness of the report and the <br /> clarity. One Council Member inquired about grants and Dr. Bell noted that staff will <br /> continue to be diligent in applying for grants. The Mayor thanked the presenters. <br /> C. Presentation: Parks, Recreation, and Community Services <br /> Department - Chris Beth, Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Director <br /> Mr. Beth, provided an overview of what his department is focusing on when it comes to <br /> initiatives (on file). He noted that they have strained resources and they are trying to <br /> find resourceful ways to get people to donate. He announced the creation of the Parks <br /> Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 that allows people to provide various resources.
