6.1.1. - Page 15
• Food Assistance. Peninsula Family Service is responsible for our daily nutrition program for
older adults as well as the weekly`Brown Bag" grocery program. The FOCC Information and
Referral program provides emergency food assistance and then immediately connects families
and individuals to a variety of ongoing food program options —our monthly family food
distribution, the older adults nutrition program and weekly grocery distribution, Salvation
Army's bi-weekly food distribution, St. Anthony's Dining room, or one of several other ongoing
food programs in our local community. We also participate in LIBRE (Linking Immigrants to
Benefits, Resources, and Education), a collaborative effort spearheaded by Legal Aid that assists
clients to access CalFresh and other public benefits.
• Homeless Services. As the primary intake point for homeless individuals and families from our
service area, the Information and Referral Program works very closely with our local shelter
providers —especially Shelter Network's Maple Street Shelter, Shelter Network's Family Shelter
Team (for both First Step for Families and Redwood Family House), St. Vincent De Paul's
Homeless Services Team, and Samaritan House' Safe Harbor Shelter. Beyond doing initial
intake and referral, our program also continues to offer our Early Entry Shelter Program that
provides an opportunity for single homeless adults seeking shelter to begin their process towards
ending their homelessness even when shelter beds are not available. For those who qualify, this
program offers a place to stay (utilizing motel vouchers) coupled with initial case management
which lays the groundwork for the services that will continue once they bridge into the shelter
system. Even after clients have entered the local shelter,we continue to coordinate services
with the shelter case management staff—particularly as clients are moving out of the shelter into
permanent housing. We also provide deposit assistance or make referrals to Shelter Network's
Housing First Program for those homeless individuals or families who have the income to move
back into permanent housing without ever going to shelter. Finally,we continue to be actively
involved in the efforts of the Redwood City Homeless Outreach Team—parmering in the
outreach and utilization of resources to help chronically homeless individuals in Redwood City
move off the street into permanent housing.
• Homeless Prevention Services. Families or individuals who are at risk of losing their housing are
assisted in a variety of ways. After doing an initial assessment, our Human Services Specialists
determine what programs/services a family or individual may be eligible for—the SF Chronicle
Season of Sharing Fund, the Housing Industry Foundation Fund, the recendy established
Community Action Agency (CAA) Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) Program or via a
referral to St. Vincent de Paul. We rely on Legal Aid's eviction defense services to prevent
clients from being evicted or to "buy" time for clients to move into other permanent housing.
Single adults or families of no more than two people are often referred to HIP Housing—on site
at Fair Oaks Community Center every Tuesday and Thursday - to explore shared housing as an
option for more affordable housing. One of the clientsproided homelessnessprevention assistance is
Anne', a singlearorking momarith a 7 month old child. She came to us for the first time last fall after haing
been illegalZy eicted from hergarage apartment. She had slept in her caraith her child the night before. That
same afternoon, arearere able to connect heraith Legal Aid staff attorney, Daid Carduccz, arhoaras able to
advocate on her behaZf andget her back into her apartment until she could find anotherplace to live. She later
returned for assistancearith deposit for the near place that she had found to rent.
Our ability to integrate and coordinate services is enhanced by the fact that multiple service
providers are at the Fair Oaks Community Center. Our staff places an emphasis on maintaining
Name has been changed to protect client confidentiality.
