Organization and Collaborative Experience
The Fair Oaks Community Center has been serving the Redwood City and North Fair Oaks
Communities for 38 years utilizing a model that brings together a combination of City, County, and
non-profit agencies, programs and services under one roof.
We have 30 years of experience providing safety net services through our Information and Referral
Program. In addition to our ability to integrate and coordinate services, described above, as well as
the data provided on our current impact, some of the specific achievements that describe our
organization's capacity are:
• In the first three-quarters of FY 11-12,we provided 1622 units of food (emergency food,
grocery certificates, monthly food distribution); 151 motel vouchers; 365 shelter referrals
(families and individuals), 83 rental and/or deposit assistance payments; and 483 referrals to
other programs and services. This includes our monthly food distribution for families, currently
averaging 130 families per month.
• Active participation in the launching of the newly re-established Community Action Agency
(CAA) for San Mateo County—to eliminate the causes and ameliorate the conditions of poverty,
by advancing the self-sufficiency of low income families and individuals in San Mateo County.
Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County has been providing eviction defense in San Mateo County
for over 50 years and has been offering housing clinics at the Fair Oaks Community Center since
2007. More than half(56%) of the 871 Answers filed in San Mateo CountSuperior Court in 2011
were prepared by Legal Aid.
Peninsula Family Service has been operating the services at Fair Oaks Community Center since 2000
and prior to that, also operated the senior dining program at the Martin Luther King Center in San
Mateo from 1986-2003. In FY 2011-2012 year to date, the nutrition program has provided 5,971
breakfasts and 4,645 lunches to 454 unduplicated adults so far in addition to almost 3,500 brown
bags served or delivered to 130 unduplicated clients.
9. Organizational capacity
Our current organizational capacity builds on our 30 years of experience providing for food and
shelter needs in our community. The Human Services Manager and three permanent full-time
Human Services Specialists have a combined total of 48 years of experience in the human services
field. The City Council is the board of directors for the city organization, currently led by Mayor
Alicia Aguirre.
The City's Finance Department is responsible for the overall fiscal health and management of the
organization. The Human Services Manager is responsible for the overall budget and operations of
the Fair Oaks Community Center and its related programs. The current Human Services Manager
has been in that role for 11-1/2 years, directly supervises the administrative staff responsible for
financial accounting and recordkeeping for the Fair Oaks Community Center, and works closely
with the directors of Legal Aid Society and Peninsula Family Service.
10.
