Public Hearing and Second Reading of Ordinance to Promote <br /> Sustainability by Prohibiting Retail Food Vendors in Redwood City <br /> from Using Polystyrene-Based Disposable Food Service Containers <br /> Mr. Smith, noted that at the April 9 meeting, the Council introduced an ordinance to <br /> initiate this action and tonight with this recommendation the Council will be banning the <br /> use of polystyrene from food services in our community. He opined this action will have <br /> various benefits and there will be a coordinated effort between the City and the County <br /> to inform the community. He noted the ordinance will be effective January 1, 2013. He <br /> also introduced Mr. Dean Peterson, Environmental Health Director with the County of <br /> San Mateo. One Council Member inquired about a letter received from the California <br /> Restaurant Association and a plan to have better ways to dispose of littering and <br /> education on how to improve it. Mr. Smith confirmed that was going to be part of the <br /> Action Plan. Other Council Members asked other questions. <br /> Mayor Aguirre opened the Public Hearing. <br /> Public Comment <br /> Josh Sonnenfeld, speaking on behalf of Save the Bay, expressed their thanks to City <br /> Council for moving forward on this. He said the Redwood Creek and other waterways <br /> suffer from pollution and commented favorably on San Mateo County's ordinance. He <br /> asked for more consistency for retailers and customers and asked that other cities join <br /> others in this ban. <br /> Marianna Tubman said she lives in unincorporated North Fair Oaks and is also part of <br /> the Sierra Club's Loma Prieta group. She spoke in favor of less use of plastics. She <br /> expressed her thanks on moving ahead with this and would like to encourage the City to <br /> do outreach at North Fair Oaks festivals and the Fourth of July to not bring plastic <br /> bottles and styrofoam to public events. <br /> M/S Seybert/Gee to close the Public Hearing.
