BFI employees will be trained specifically as to what is acceptable for composting
and what can contaminate the compost feedstock.

Materials accepted for yard waste collection:

D Grass clippings
[] Brush and weeds
[] Pruning and tree trimmings
[] Leaves
[] Tree trunks (less than 6" diameter)

Materials unacceptable for yard waste collection:

[] Rocks, concrete, sod and dirt
[] Plastic bags
[] Fruits or vegetables
[] Household garbage
[] Demolition wood
[] Pet waste
[] Palm fronds

Any contaminants placed in yard waste containers will be detected when the
matedal is emptied into the hopper of the collection truck. When contaminants are
spotted the collector will remove the matedal and tag the container with a guideline
describing proper yard waste procedures and acceptable materials. The tagging
program has been used successfully by BFI's recycling collection ddvers for the past
five years.

The matedal collected from the yard waste routes will be unloaded at the San Carlos
Transfer Station in a designated area reserved only for yard waste from BFI vehicles
and seE-haulers such as commercial landscapers. Matedal unloaded' in this area will
have "load inspectors" to insure that contaminants are not getting mixed in with the
yard waste material. From our experience in other jurisdictions, BFI anticipates less
than 3% of the yard waste material will be contaminated. The inspected matedal will
then be loaded into a 148 cubic yard transfer trailer for haul to the Ox Mountain
composting area for processing.
