BFI has demonstrated its concern with developing compost markets by
independently funding research on the use of green waste mulch in Citrus Orchards
in Ventura County. The University of California Cooperative Extension Service,
under the direction of Dr. Ben Faber, is conducting the project. The project seeks
to evaluate and quantify the effects of mulch on moisture retention and water
conservation, nematode prevention and nutrient value.

At the University of California - Riverside Extension agents are using 245 tons of
BFI's Organo Recycle mulch to study the effects of green waste mulch in reducing
weeds, providing Phytopthera and Zinimonis control and retaining moisture.

CALTRANS, in close cooperation with BFi, has applied compost to a roads cut in the
Bishop and Lone Pine areas to demonstrate erosion control. The stUdy shows the
advantages of erosion control mulch over traditional hay mulches, geotextile mats
and hydroseeding. Another such project demonstrates weed corrtrol and moisture
retention on tree basins..BFI is assisting CALTRANS staff in drafting a written
specification for the use of composted mulch on roadside landscaping projects.
Hundreds of thousands of ton equivalents of topsoil and erosion control products are
specified in CALTRANS projects throughout the state each year. Municipalities like
San Marcos & Corona are also developing markets and best practices with BFI.

GENERAL BFI MARKETING CAPABILITIES and EXISTING SALES
INFRASTRUCTURE

BFI has extensive experience in marketing recycled soil products, mulches and
horticultural'supplies. In 1994, BFI will sell or distribute in excess of 1,000,000 tons
of product nationally. The national division, "BFI Organics", a distinct operating
entity within the BFI family, has approximately 30 processing, composting and/or
bagging operations. In addition to marketing products generated by its own
operations, BFI markets recycled organic products under contract for manufacturers
and municipalities nationwide. This level of experience allows BFI to understand
both the opportunities and difficulties in marketing compost and developing effective
marketing strategies.

In California, BF! sells and distributes approximately 175,000 tons of recycled
organic products. A California sales team comprised of 7 sales specialists includes
expertise in mass merchandizing, agriculture, and horticulture. The sales team
services a growing customer base of over 300 today.
