6.1.A. - Page 6
development is Greystar Development on Monroe and it will be breaking ground this
summer. Raintree Development is another project on Maple Street with 116 residential
units, and he explained the coordination needed on the parking needs. He added that
the Alchemy Apartments project on Winslow is a small project ,but will add workers to
the downtown area. Also, the 525 Middlefield project at the Credit Union site, with close
to 500 units of residential, will break ground this summer.
He touched on other projects outside of downtown such as the Mel's Bowl site on EI
Camino and a few more including the One Marina site. Subsequently, Mr. Ekern stated
that 333 Main Street should be completed by the end of 2013. He provided a synopsis
of the number of units that will be under construction, and alerted everyone that the
downtown will be very busy and all will be impacted by the pressure of the workers.
Regarding the Bradford Parking Lot, to be shared with Kaiser, he noted a grant for an
electronic application that will allow people in search of parking to have information at
their fingertips and through their mobile devices.
One Council Member inquired about the shuttles idea and having workers park farther
away. Mr. Ekern said that staff has explored various options and how the city is looking
at options including shuttle services. Mr. Ekern said that discussions are still being
explored and the city can be the enabler of private partnerships. Dr. Bell noted that
some of the workers needed to be close to the vehicles because of their vehicles
housing the tools for their jobs.
Another Council Member noted that he appreciates that staff is anticipating the issues
and the awareness of what is coming to downtown. He wants staff to focus on the
communication and messaging pieces and find ways to accommodate everyone.
Another Council Member echoed the same comments, and she noted that there should
be discussions with the Building and Trade Union so that expectations are clear.
Another Council Member said that the issue of the public parking facilities needs to be
explored and if additional decks of parking need to be considered so be it. Mr. Ekern
said that staff is in the process of negotiating the Middlefield parking lot, and he noted
this will be a difficult three years and how staff is identifying as many options as possible
for impact mitigation.
Vice Mayor Gee would like a menu of options to provide developers and partners we
can enlist to help us in this transitional phase. He is open to creative ideas to address
parking issues. The Mayor echoed all the comments from her colleagues. Dr. Bell
thanked Mr. Ekern for his hard work and expertise as well as his staff. He appreciates
having him on his team.
JOINT CITY COUNCIUSUCCESSOR AGENCY BOARD December 3, 2012
MEETING MINUTES PAGE 6
