Most measurements of air quality are to be corrected to <br /> a reference temperature of 25°C and a reference pressure of 760 torr; ppm in this table refers to ppm by volume,or <br /> micromoles of pollutant per mole of gas. <br /> 4. Federal Primary Standards: levels of air quality necessary,with an adequate margin of safety to protect the public health. <br /> 5. Federal Secondary Standards: levels of air quality necessary to protect the public welfare from any known or anticipated <br /> adverse effects of a pollutant. <br /> 6. In this case,the federal standards of 53 ppb and 100 ppb are identical <br /> to 0.053 ppm and 0.100 ppm, respectively. <br /> 7. On June 2,2010,the U.S. EPA established a new 1-hour SOZ standard,effective August 23,2010,which is based on the 3- <br /> year average of the annual 99th percentile of 1-hour daily maximum concentrations. The EPA also revoked both the existing <br /> 24-hour SOZ standard of 0.14 ppm and the annual primary SOZ standard of 0.030 ppm,effective August 23,2010. The <br /> secondary SOZ standard was not revised at that time; however,the secondary standard is undergoing a separate review by <br /> EPA. Note that the new standard is in units of parts per billion(ppb).California standards are in units of parts per million <br /> (ppm). To directly compare the new primary federal standard to the California standard the units can be converted to ppm.
