Redwood City Costco Gasoline Expansion ProjE 7.A. - Page 244
August 20,2012 ruye 3
Comparison of Redwood City Activity to Other Costco Locations
To provide context for the trip generation evaluation, Costco provided the recent sales volume for the
existing Redwood City fuel station. The same known, real world data was pulled for other proximate
locations to document how activity and sales at Redwood City compares to that of other example
locations. The sites have been summarized as requested by the City since they are located near the
Redwood City site and frequently are raised for comparison and contrast to the Redwood City Costco.
The details and specifics of the representative sites used to determine a baseline are shown in Table
10. The specific membership information and actual sales and activity volumes are not listed due to
the privacy and proprietary nature of the data, but the activity and volume level of each sample site in
comparison to the baseline Redwood City site is provided.
Table 10 Example Fuel Station Characteristics,
January 1, 2011-May 31, 2011 (gas), November 1, 2009-May 31, 2011 (warehouse)
Percentage of Redwood City Costco Data
Number of Total Fuel Average Daily Average Daily
Location Fuel Islands Transactions Gallons Sold Warehouse Size Warehouse Sales
Redwood City 3 100%(Baseline) 100%(Baseline) 100%(Baseline) 100%(Baseline)
Santa Clara 3 109% 109% 84% 101%
EI Camino 4 138% 126% 91% 125%
NE San Jose 4 138% 136% 91% 106%
SanJosell 4 114% 109% 97% 106%
As shown in Table 10, the example proximate Costco locations currently have higher total fuel
transactions and average daily gallons sold than the Redwood City site. Additionally, while the
warehouses are all smaller than Redwood City, the average daily warehouse sales are also higher
than existing sales at Redwood City. This shows that the Redwood City Costco Gasoline facility is
currently generating fewer trips and selling less fuel than other locations in the area. The numbers
reported are total transactions and sales (not just peak hour transaction and sales) and, therefore,
represent the full demand for the Redwood City location and are not metered or constrained by what
the existing 3 island facility can process during the peak hour. Over the whole day the numbers
shown for Redwood City are not lower just because it has fewer fueling positions.
Kittelson&Associates,Inc. Boise,Idaho
