The Foundation's 2013 Grant Application Process
The 2013 Silicon Valley Community Foundation Safety Net Services: Food and Shelter
Program Request for Proposals (RFP) once again includes an additional financial
contribution of $500,000 from San Mateo County, totaling $1 million in grant funds
available to support food and shelter serving organizations in San Mateo County for
Fiscal Year 2013-2014. The current grant application process (RFP) focuses on
"organizations that have a proven track record of success with the community
foundation and work in close collaboration with Health and Human Services agencies in
one or both counties. Those organizations that have an existing funding relationship for
food — and shelter — related services with the community foundation will be given
priority."
The deadline for the online submittal of grant applications for this RFP is March 29,
2013. Applicants will be informed of grant decisions in July 2013.
ANALYSIS
This year's Silicon Valley Community Foundation Safety Net Services: Food and Shelter
Program grant application process is very similar to last year's RFP where the Fair
Oaks Community Center submitted a successful collaborative proposal to provide food,
shelter, and homelessness prevention services at the Fair Oaks Community Center.
Staff proposes submitting a grant application in the amount of $80,000 similar to the
successful 2012 grant application to include the following three components for FY
2013-2014:
o The Fair Oaks Community Center Information and Referral Program providing
food assistance, homelessness services, and homelessness prevention ($30,000
total to include $20,000 towards core operations and $10,000 to hire Public Allies
Benefits Navigator through the summer of 2013);
o Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County's Eviction Defense and Homelessness
Prevention Legal Services — in particular their Housing Clinic at Fair Oaks
Community Center ($25,000); and
o Peninsula Family Service Food and Nutrition Programs for low income and food
insecure older adults at the Fair Oaks Adult Activity Center ($25,000).
Both Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County and Peninsula Family Service are already
providing the services included in the grant request. Being able to facilitate this
collaborative proposal is another way for the City to continue to support our non-profit
partners in providing much needed services in our community.
