4.15 RECREATION
4.15.1 Existing Setting
Redwood City has approximately 225 acres of park facilities including mini-parks,neighborhood
parks, community parks, special use parks, and sports fields on public school property. In addition to
parks the City manages four community centers which offer opportunities for fitness and classroom
activities. The City also has one senior center, two outdoor pools that are operated during the
summer months, and several recreational bicycle paths including access to the regional Bay Trail.
Although bicycle facilities are provided along many roadways, the bicycle network in Redwood City
does not serve the project area. The City Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services
is responsible for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of City recreational facilities.
The Veteran's Memorial Senior Center,located at 1455 Madison Avenue(approximately 1.5 miles
northwest of the project site, provides senior services, classes, and special social events for the senior
residents of Redwood City.
4.15.2 Environmental Checklist and Discussion of Impacts
RECREATION
Less Than
Potentially Significant Less Than
Significant With Significant No Impact Beneficial Information
Impact Mitigation Impact Pf Source(s)
Incorporated
Would the project:
1) Increase the use of existing 1,2,3
neighborhood and regional parks or
other recreational facilities such that
substantial physical deterioration of
the facility would occur or be
accelerated?
2) Does the project include recreational 1,2,3
facilities or require the construction
or expansion of recreational facilities
which might have an adverse physical
effect on the environment?
The addition of approximately 65 residents to Redwood City would not result in accelerated
deterioration of local recreational facilities or the need for new recreational facilities. The future
residents of the project site would more likely utilize the senior center than other recreational
facilities in the City. An additional 65 persons attending events, classes, or other activities at the
senior center would not require an expansion of the existing facility, the construction of a new
facility, or result in substantial deterioration of the existing facility. Therefore, implementation of the
proposed project would have a less than significant impact on recreational facilities within the City.
(Less Than Significant Impact)
4.15.3 Conclusion
Implementation of the proposed project would not result in accelerated deterioration of local
recreational facilities or the need for new recreational facilities.
