4.17.1.3 Storm Drainage System
The Redwood City Public Works Services Department maintains the storm drainage system which
serves the project site. Stormwater in Redwood City is conveyed into creeks, lined channels, storm
drainage pipes and retention basins, all of which drain directly into San Francisco Bay.
4.17.1.4 Solid Waste
Solid waste and recyclable materials from Redwood City are initially transported to the South
Bayside Transfer Station(SBTS),41 located in the City of San Carlos. In 2006,Redwood City
diverted 61 percent of its waste from landfills through recycling and reuse.
Solid waste that is not diverted from the landfill is compacted at the transfer station. Approximately
90 percent of solid waste that is not diverted is sent to the Ox Mountain Sanitary Landfill, located
east of Half Moon Bay in unincorporated San Mateo County. According to the California lntegrated
Waste Management Board(CIWMB),the Ox Mountain Landfill is estimated to have a remaining
capacity of at least 31 million cubic yards or 80 percent of the landfill's total potential capacity.42
This landfill is currently permitted to operate through January 2018. The other 10 percent of
Redwood City's solid waste is diverted to numerous landfills in the Bay Area and elsewhere in the
State of California. The City generated approximately 76,436 tons of solid waste in 2009.
The existing jewelry store generates approximately 26 pounds of solid waste per day.43 The
restaurant has been vacant since 2000 so no solid waste generation was assumed.
4.17.2 Environmental Checklist and Discussion of Impacts
UTILITIES AND SERVICE SYSTEMS
Less Than
Potentially Significant Less Than
Significant With Significant No Impact Beneficial Information
Impact Mitigation Impact Pf Source(s)
Inco orated
Would the project:
1) Exceed wastewater treatment 1,2,3
requirements of the applicable
Regional Water Quality Control
Board?
2) Require or result in the construction 1,2,3
of new water or wastewater treatment
facilities or expansion of esting
facilities,the construction of which
could cause significant environmental
effects?
41 A transfer station is where recyclables and refuse are collected and sorted in preparation for processing or landfill.
4z California lntegrated Waste Management Board. 20ll.
<http://www.calrec clgov/arofiles/Facility/LandfilULFI'rofileIl.as?Ct7II=4Il&FACII=4Il-AA-0002>
Accessed September 12,2012.
43 California lntegrated Waste Management Board.
