The Police Department has advised staff that it is very difficult patrolling the area for illegal activity because of the handball courts. Superintendent Hover stated that the issue is not the activity of handball, but the facility being in the wrong place. The Commissioners discussed the fact that the majority of the neighbors at the two public meetings expressed their concern about illegal activities happening at the handball courts and their desire to have the handball courts removed and replaced with a basketball court. Only one person at the second public meeting was in favor of keeping the handball courts. Commissioner Swope said she would like the Commission to provide another location for the handball courts so people could continue to play the sport in a safe location. The Commissioners felt that they needed to listen to the neighbors and allow the project to move forward. Mr. Vorametsanti stated that the bids for the project will go out in January/February 2008 and the construction will begin after April 15, 2008. M/S Wright/Sargent: To approve the recommendation of the sub- committee and approve the Hoover Park renovation plans as proposed. Motion passed unanimously. M/S Swope/White: To request that the Needs Assessment sub- committee incorporate a location for the handball courts in their plans. Commissioner Swope stated that the Commission heard the request that there is a need for quality handball courts in Redwood City. Motion passed unanimously. ITEM 3 — ACCEPTANCE OF DEPARTMENT ANNUAL REPORT Director Centeno stated that all comments have been incorporated into the draft annual report and asked the Commission for their acceptance of the report. She noted the City Council will hold their Priority Setting Session on February 25, 2008. M/S White/Wright: To accept the Department Annual Report with edits. Motion passed. ITEM 2 — SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS -Park Needs Assessment Superintendent Hover reported the sub-committee is scheduled to meet on December 6 and January 10, and that the study will be presented at the January Commission meeting.
