The Police Department has advised staff that it is very difficult <br /> patrolling the area for illegal activity because of the handball courts. <br /> Superintendent Hover stated that the issue is not the activity of handball, but <br /> the facility being in the wrong place. <br /> The Commissioners discussed the fact that the majority of the neighbors at <br /> the two public meetings expressed their concern about illegal activities <br /> happening at the handball courts and their desire to have the handball courts <br /> removed and replaced with a basketball court. Only one person at the <br /> second public meeting was in favor of keeping the handball courts. <br /> Commissioner Swope said she would like the Commission to provide another <br /> location for the handball courts so people could continue to play the sport in <br /> a safe location. The Commissioners felt that they needed to listen to the <br /> neighbors and allow the project to move forward. Mr. Vorametsanti stated <br /> that the bids for the project will go out in January/February 2008 and the <br /> construction will begin after April 15, 2008. <br /> M/S Wright/Sargent: To approve the recommendation of the sub- <br /> committee and approve the Hoover Park renovation plans as <br /> proposed. <br /> Motion passed unanimously. <br /> M/S Swope/White: To request that the Needs Assessment sub- <br /> committee incorporate a location for the handball courts in their <br /> plans. <br /> Commissioner Swope stated that the Commission heard the request that <br /> there is a need for quality handball courts in Redwood City. <br /> Motion passed unanimously. <br /> ITEM 3 — ACCEPTANCE OF DEPARTMENT ANNUAL REPORT <br /> Director Centeno stated that all comments have been incorporated into the <br /> draft annual report and asked the Commission for their acceptance of the <br /> report. She noted the City Council will hold their Priority Setting Session on <br /> February 25, 2008. <br /> M/S White/Wright: To accept the Department Annual Report with <br /> edits. <br /> Motion passed. <br /> ITEM 2 — SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS <br /> -Park Needs Assessment <br /> Superintendent Hover reported the sub-committee is scheduled to meet on <br /> December 6 and January 10, and that the study will be presented at the <br /> January Commission meeting. <br />
