"Noteworthies" and have students who range in age from 55 to 95 years old.
The group performs 2-3 times per year and has performed at the Belmont
Women's Club and some Redwood City churches. Ms. Swendell explained
the program can pay for the teacher but cannot afford the cost of the
accompanist. Currently the accompanist is volunteering her time but will
not be able to do this much longer. The Noteworthies are requesting a grant
of $1,500.00 to pay for the accompanist and the cost of sheet music for all 25-30
participants. Barbara McGrady and John Bergues, both members of the
Noteworthies, spoke on behalf of the group. Ms. McGrady explained the
group previously used taped music during their classes but it was not
effective. She felt that having an accompanist is a vital part of practicing and
performing and she is very concerned about losing their accompanist. She
said Tina Baird is a wonderful teacher and teaches her students different
aspects of performing including stage presence. Mr. Bergues said the grant
would also be used to purchase sheet music for each member of the group
and he felt singing keeps the participants healthy and active. Ms. Swendell
said that the Noteworthies would be available for music concerts whether or
not a grant was made to the group.
Commissioner Piulle asked Ms. Swendell if other classes have to pay for their
supplies and she responded that funds are received from the State for the
classes and that many types of classes require a lab fee. This particular class
does not have a registration fee or a lab fee and is free to the participants.
Commissioner Filippi asked if the group has any other sources of funding
and it was explained that the group applied to the Fun After Fifty group
located at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center this week. The matter was
tabled until the Fun After Fifty group could determine if they had made a
grant to the Noteworthies last year. If a grant was made last year, the grant
request would be declined because it was a one-time only grant.
Commissioner Distefano asked if the group charged for their performances
and was advised they did not charge but could accept donations.
ITEM 2-PRESENTATION BY DALE PERKINS-RED MORTON CENTER
Artist Dale Perkins explained that he was involved several years ago with the
City of Burlingame incorporating children's art into public buildings, such as
schools, City Hall, fire stations and city parking lots. The program was called
the "Downtown Children's Art Program". Commissioner Piulle explained
she was interested in having public art placed in the new Red Morton Center
and felt that children's art would be safer from graffiti than other types of art.
Mr. Perkins shared postcards and slides of the various pieces of art displayed
in Burlingame. He said the program was completed with the assistance of the
schools, PTAs, Beautification Committee, and other non-profit groups such at
Rotary and Kiwanis. The purpose of the program was to extend education in
the classroom in a visual art form for the students. As part of the program,
