would also like to tie this event into other seasonal community events such
as the Fourth of July Parade.
Mrs. Mayers explained the contestants are judged on scholastic ability, talent,
poise, image (75% of the program) and bathing suit/evening gown
competition (25% of the program). She stated the pageant is open to young
women between the ages of 17 to 24 and there are no height or weight
requirements for the contestants. She said that scholastic goals are really
being heavily emphasized in the pageant versus selecting winners based on
beauty. Currently 10 applications have been received and Mrs. Mayers said
she expects to receive about 20 applications total. She sees this as a cultural
event because the contestant selected will be an ambassador to represent our
community at all cultural events. The Commissioners discussed the aspects
of the pageant and supporting a portion of the program that was related to
culture. Mrs. Mayers said funding is needed for scholarships, buffet, music,
printing, scenery, and costumes for the event. She explained that at a recent meeting with the City Manager, staff was
given a guideline of a 2 1/2% increase in supplies and services although any
increase is expected to have strong justification.
