department's budget. She noted the Commissioners are welcome to attend
and speak at the City Council budget hearings in June.
The Commissioners discussed the funds donated from the Port Commission
for the 1994 Summer Concert Program. They also suggested looking into uses
of Redevelopment monies for cultural events. Commissioner Piulle asked if
the $980.00 leftover from the Fox Theater Funding Program could be used by
the Cultural Commission. Superintendent Hartman will check the Fox
Theater Guidelines to see what stipulations would apply to the use of the
remaining funds. The Commissioners want to see if the Cultural
Commission can help with the renovation of Carrington Hall through the
possible use of Redevelopment funds.
The Commissioners asked that a letter be sent to Sequoia High School
Principal Earl Walker and Sequoia Union High School District
Superintendent Merle Fruehling to investigate the current needs of
Carrington Hall because of immediate funding available in the Commission's
budget. It was suggested that Councilman Paul Sanfilipo be invited to the
April meeting to speak about Carrington Hall.
The Commissioners discussed using a portion of their FY94-95 budget to
purchase public art. They felt that funds should not have to be allocated out
of the Commission's small budget to pay for public art in City facilities but
that funds should be incorporated within each City project for art.
M/S Moran/Redington: To eliminate the $2,000 allocated for a public art
program in the FY94-95 budget.
Motion passed.
Commissioner Ball said she would contact Joe Marchi to discuss a future joint
program. Commissioner Distefano will check with the Redwood City
Merchants Group; Commissioner Moran will check with the Redwood City
Art Center; and Chairperson Filippi will check with Pete's Harbor for possible
activities and grants. All Commissioners will report back at the April
meeting.
Miss Redwood City Pageant Grant Request
The Commissioners discussed their individual views of the pageant and that
the support they give be strictly for cultural aspects of the program.
M/S Redington/Ball: To donate $1,000 to the Miss Redwood City Pageant to
be used specifically for entertainment or scholarships.
Commissioner Piulle said she would not support the grant because she felt it
was a beauty pageant and it was not an appropriate event for the Cultural
Commission to fund. Commissioner Ball felt it was not just a beauty pageant
but gives encouragement to young women and an opportunity to advance.
