  .
, '

ITEM 2-PRESENTATION BY REDWOOD CTTY HISTORIC RESOURCES
COMMITTEE
Ken Rolandelli, President of the Redwood City Historic Resources Advisory
Committee (HRAC) explained the HRAC reports to the Plaruting
Commission and advses them on renovation as it relates to the City's
Historic Preservation Ordinance. He noted that Carrington Hall was built in
1923 and the Sequoia High School campus is on the Register of Historic
Places. Mr. Rolandelli said it is essential to maintain the historic integrity of
Carrington Hall during any renovation. It will also be necessary to consider
the standards of the Secretary of the Interior, ADA (Americans with
Disabilities Act) guidelines and the City's Historic Ordinance. Mr. Rolandelli
explained that all exterior work proposed for the renovation will require the
approval of the Planning Commission.
Because of the listing on the Register of Historic Places, there are several
possible sources of funding, although the competition is very heavy. Mr.
Rolandelli said he felt the Carrington Hall project is an extremely worthwhile
and important project and a joint effort between the City, School District, and
the Sequoia Alumni Association is the best way to go.
ITEM 3-PRESENTATION BY SEQUOIA UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT
Assistant School Superintendent Don Gielow of the Sequoia Union High
School District explained that due to budget constraints, the highest priority of
the School District is to house students in classrooms. They cannot afford to
renovate the facility themselves and are very excited that the Cultural
Commission, Sequoia Alumni Association and the communit3r have
expressed an interest in the project. Mr. Gielow felt Carrington Hall could
become a community performing arts center which could be used by the
School District, the City and members of the community. He explained that
their Board of Trustees passed a resolution to cooperate and support the
efforts to work with the community in renovating Carrington Hall. Mr.
Gielow was very appreciative of the efforts being made on this project.
Sequoia Principal Earl Walker also expressed his support and appreciation.
ITEM 4- PRESENTATION BY SEQUOIA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
Sequoia Alumni Association President Frank Bravo explained the
rehabilitation of Carrington Hall has been a goal of his organization since
1985. In 1987, they began an endowment fund to pay for the renovation of
Carrington Hall and have raised $15,000 so far and they are still accepting
donations. Mr. Bravo gave a history of Otis Carrington and his
accomplishments. He stated the Alumni Association is dedicated to the
project and is willing to participate in the joint venture with the City and the
School District.
