Filippi discussed the meeting between Raices de Mexico and PCS which was
to be held tonight and the request of PCS to retract statements made by City
Councilmembers which appeared in local newspapers. He felt that $15,000.00
was being designated to one facility and that the Commission should be able
to grant funds to groups who want to use a different venue other than the
Fox Theater.
Commissioner Piulle felt strongly that the Commission should continue
using the $15,000.00 at the Fox Theater because it enhances the surrounding
area. She suggested opening up the grant process to non-local groups who
would like to utilize the Fox. She felt that if money was left after making the
grants then the Commission should be able to use it elsewhere. She also felt
that we are getting our money's worth.
Commissioner Filippi felt the Commission should be given the charge to
make decisions to use funds where it decided is best and not be restricted to
any particular location.
Commissioner Ball felt that the $15,000.00 was given to encourage use of the
Fox Theater and it is not used to the fullest extent it should be. She felt the
$1.00 surcharge should not be presented as a historic preservation fee.
M/S Distefano/Piulle: To extend the meeting to 10:15pm
Motion passed.
Commissioner Distefano felt the Commission should have the discretion to
decide where to use the monies and not be restricted to the Fox T'heater
because money could be used more effectively elsewhere.
Commissioner Redington felt it would not be good to take action that might
undermine the Fox Theater Task Force.
Commissioner Moran agreed with Commissioner Piulle that the
Commission should continue its responsibility with Fox Theater Grant
Program.
Don Saye felt the Commission should continue its support of the Fox T'heater
grant program. Chairperson Filippi asked to delay a vote on this matter until
the February meeting when Commissioner Fischer would be in attendance.
Superintendent Hartman said the Fox Theater Task Force will be meeting in
January and a report may be coming which may help the Commissioners
make a better decision on this matter.
M/S Distefano/Ball: To extend the meeting until 10:30pm.
Motion passed.
