ITEM 12- EVALUATION OR DISCUSSION OF CULTURAL EVENTS HELD <br /> DURING THE PAST 30 DAYS <br /> -Commissioners Moran and Redington attended the Library program on <br /> Robert Louis Stevenson and said it was excellent. <br /> -Commissioners Distefano said she received many favorable comments on <br /> the new sculpture at the Police Facility and thanked Commissioners Fischer <br /> and Piulle for a fine job selecting the art piece. <br /> -Commissioner Ball said she heard excellent comments on the performance <br /> of "Fiddler on the Roof" and the Downtown Childrens' Parade. She also <br /> enjoyed "The Nutcracker" performance at the Paramount Theater. <br /> -Commissioner Piulle noted the Mid-Peninsula Open Space District is <br /> sponsoring an art contest for children. She gave the information to <br /> Commissioner Distefano. Ruth Wolff of the School District will also be <br /> advised of the contest. <br /> MATTERS OF COMMISSION INTEREST <br /> Commissioner Ball mentioned the Christmas decorations on Candy Cane <br /> Lane were outstanding and the decorations in Redwood City surpassed many <br /> other communities. She felt the citizens of Redwood City should be <br /> complimented for their effort and for helping people in need. <br /> ITEM 9-FOX THEATER GRANT PROGRAM <br /> The Commissioners discussed the $30,000.00 grant by the City Council to the <br /> Peninsula Center Stage (PCS) and its effectiveness in the community. <br /> M/S Piulle/Redington: To endorse the concept of the City giving $30,000.00 <br /> for quality performances at the Fox Theater. T'he decision <br /> should be based on the examination of the Peninsula <br /> Center Stage's books done in 1994 by the City Council in <br /> order to provide funds in a more timely fashion. <br /> Motion passed. <br /> The Commissioners discussed the $15,000.00 Fox Theater grant program <br /> which is handled by the Commission. Chairperson Filippi said he was <br /> concerned about the $1.00 surcharge per ticket recently imposed by the PCS <br /> and that it is actually used for operating costs and not for historic <br /> preservation. He was concerned that this fee would discourage groups to pass <br /> out complimentary tickets to students. He also spoke about the deficit of <br /> $42,000.00 which was mentioned as a reason for the surcharge. Chairperson <br />
