-Commissioner Ball said she wrote to Senator Dianne Feinstein and
Congresswoman Anna Eshoo in support of the NEA. She spoke glowingly
about the Salute to Sequoia event. She commented on the San Mateo Times
offering a page in their newspaper for children to do artwork. She noted the
City received a grant of $6,500 for a tree planting program.
-Commissioner Filippi mentioned the Sequoia Alumni Association sold
$5,000 in t-shirts and $3,000 in aprons during their Centennial Celebration.
The dinner dance was a sell-out and the picnic had about 2,000 people in
attendance. He stated Sequoia High School will be inducted in the National
Registry of Historic Places this month. He also noted the Tea Garden has been
renovated and looks phenomenal. He announced local elementary school
parents have formed an ad hoc citizens advisory group for the arts and have
asked to be put on the November agenda.
-Commissioner Piulle mentioned the newspaper article about Fair Oaks
School forming a partnership with the San Mateo County Arts Council to
develop an artist in residency program.
-Commissioner Fischer congratulated the Sequoia Alumni Association for
all of their Centennial Celebration events including the performances and the
tea garden renovation.
M/S Fischer/Saye: To send a letter of congratulations and thanks to the
Sequoia Alumni Association for putting on such
outstanding celebration events.
Motion passed.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Commissioner Piulle said Redwood City International needs volunteers to
help show around the Chinese delegation. If interested, please call Pat
Valentine or Anita Leplin.
Commissioner Distefano reminded the Commissioners that they voted on
the term limit proposal several meetings ago and our Chairperson also voted
in favor of the proposal. She said Chairperson Redington made a good
presentation on the Commission's workplan at the City Council meeting on
October 2 but was concerned about the way he presented the vote information
on the proposal. She did not think the item should be re-agendized because a
vote was already taken on this item and it was bonafide. The Commissioners
expressed their comments on this matter and Commissioner Filippi
suggested that Chairperson Redington contact Mayor Gasparini to clarify the
Commission's position on this subject.
