-Commissioner Saye spoke about the Commission being involved in
community special events.
-The San Mateo County Arts Council offered an Older Artists and Poets
Competition which was an overwhelming success. Over 148 entries were
received but only 40 entries could hang in the main corridor of the San Mateo
County Government building.
-Commissioner Piulle announced she is officially resigning from the Fox
Task Force. She also mentioned the Historic Preservation Week banner
which was purchased by a grant from the Cultural Commission is hanging
downtown.
-Chairperson Redington attended the "Songs of Hope" concert which was to
raise fund for the Hunger Fund.
ITEM 1-EVALUATION OR DISCUSSION OF CULTURAL EVENTS HELD
DURING THE PAST 30 DAYS
-Raices de Mexico
The Commissioners who attended the Raices de Mexico performance at the
Fox Theater said it was a phenomenal evening. The costuming was great,
lighting was excellent, and the backdrop was beautiful. The whole
performance was in Spanish and it started out with English and Spanish.
English translations were provided but only for short portions and they were
disappointed in the narration. They felt that a bi-lingual atmosphere helps to
get people more involved in the program. They also noted there was a small
audience and felt the group was either not promoting enough or people were
just not interested and they were not getting $5,000.00 worth. The
Commissioners felt we need to make it a prerequisite that programs be
bi-lingual.
-Commissioner Filippi said he attended the Fun After Fifty Dance with
Armando Quaglia's band on Apri128 and said it was very good.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
There were no announcements.
The regular meeting of the Civic Cultural Commission was adjourned at
10:45pm to be reconvened at 7:OOpm on Thursday,June 1, 1995 to be held at
the Community Activities Building, 1400 Roosevelt Avenue, Redwood City,
California.
