past 7 years and are attended by approximately 1,500-2,500 people. Mr. Klein
noted the Peninsula Symphony has been recognized by many organizations
including the California Arts Council and they have appeared on KCSM
television programs.
Mr. Klein said the Peninsula Symphony has applied for funding of $3,500.00
to offer an afternoon pops concert possibly at Stafford Park. The only
requirement they have is that the orchestra cannot be in the direct sun. Mr.
Klein said they are open to other locations and they would be willing to work
with the Commission to make this a very special event.
Commissioner Filippi said he has attended performances of the Peninsula
Symphony and felt they are good quality performances. They also are helpful
to students and have small groups of musicians go into the elementary
schools. Commissioner Piulle said she attended their recent pops concert in
Palo Alto and stated that it was a wonderful concert.
ITEM 4- PARK &RECREATION COMMISSION FUNDING REQUEST
Park and Recreation Commissioner Ginny Hughes announced the Park and
Recreation would like to raise $15,000.00 to purchase the sound system for the
new Red Morton Center and has planned a Halloween dinner/auction to be
held on Thursday, October 26 at the new Police Facility. Cost of the tickets
will be $75.00 and food is being donated by local restaurants in order to make
this a no cost event. The funding request of $300.00 will provide $250.00 to
cover.the cost of the band and $50.00 for the printing of the tickets for the
event: She explained that another event is planned for January for the
opening of the Center and tickets for that event will be $25.00 each.
Commissioner Distefano expressed her concern about fund raising for the
Red Morton Center. She said she supports the center completely but has
problems with fund raising for this effort. Commissioner Ball was concerned
about the response of people having to pay $75.00 per ticket. Commissioner
Hughes explained the Police Facility will only hold 120 people and there will
be a limited amount of tickets available. Commissioner Piulle asked if they
had considered combining both the Halloween and January building opening
events and lowering the cost of the tickets. Commissioner Hughes explained
they are going after a different market for this event.
Commissioner Hughes said the Park and Recreation Commission was given
a "Wish List" of items for the new Center and the sound system was selected
by the planning committee for the benefit event. She expressed her feeling
that the Center is something that will be a wonderful benefit for all the
community and that we need to support it regardless of the funding issues.
