Commissioner Saye and Fischer questioned whether this was a cultural event
and if it was appropriate for the Cultural Commission to contribute towards
the event. Commissioner Filippi felt the Cultural Commission could use the
new Red Morton Center as a cultural facility in the future. For example, it
could be used as a site for a concert. He felt the Red Morton Center will be
beneficial to the community and would support the funding request.
Superintendent Hartman explained that the new Red Morton Center did not
have a lack of planning and that there was lots of discussion about what
should be in the facility. The budget was established by the City and the Red
Morton Steering Committee decided that they did not want to cut corners and
build a lesser facility. This meant coming in over budget, so the Committee
determined that certain items could be put on a "wish list". The Park and
Recreation Commission then decided to do a major fundraising effort and
bring the community into the process.
Commissioner Piulle felt the ticket price did not make this event accessible to
everyone. Commissioner Hughes spoke on supporting the community
center and its benefit to the entire community. She also stated that the later
event in January would be available for a larger group.
ITEM 5-CASA DE REDWOOD FUNDING REQUEST
Peter Hughes, President of the Board of Trustees for Casa de Redwood, stated
that Casa de Redwood is a subsidized senior facility which is occupied by 180
seniors. He explained that once a year the Board sponsors a BBQ for their
senior clients. This year's event is being planned for Saturday, September 9
and they have applied for funding to pay for a band to provide entertainment
at the BBQ. T'he Peninsula Sunrise Rotary Club will also assist with the
event. More than 100 seniors attended last year's event.
Commissioner Filippi stated he will be putting together the band for the
event and will be donating his services. Therefore, he will be abstaining from
the vote on the funding request.
ITEM 1 - LIBRARY PROGRAMS
Supervisor Hedges noted that the San Mateo City Council has started an
awards program that emulates the Redwood City's Pride and Beautification
Awards and she has received one of these awards. She mentioned that
August is a quiet month for Library activities although the Library is still very
busy with customers. She handed out a brochure on "Dialing into the
Peninsula Library System Catalog". The Trivia Bee will be held Friday,
October 13.
Returning to Item 2:
M/S Saye/Fischer: To grant $2,000 to the Climate Best Fest.
