Civic Cultural Commission Page 4 "
Minutes of June 6, 1996
of possible program cuts to provide the City Council with alternatives for
dealing with this issue. Superintendent Centeno stated one of the
alternatives recommended by department management staff was to cut the
FY97-98 budget of the Cultural Commission by $30,000.00. She also noted that
the other recommended cuts included reducing recreational swim hours at
the City pools, and cutting the Middle School Spring Sports program.
Commissioner Filippi asked if the Commission could explore the option of
applying for CDBG funds as a possible source of funding for the
Commission's programs. Superintendent Centeno said she will get the
criteria for CDBG but advised the Corrunissioners that there is considerable
competition for these funds. The Commissioners discussed speaking to
individual Councilmembers about the possible funding cut and the
importance of the Commission's role in filling the gap where the school
system has failed. She stated
the Port of Redwood City will be advertising the concert at the Port.
ITEM 7-RED MORTON ART
Supervisor Hannon stated the City is currenily in negotiation with artist
Helen Webber for the purchase of the new art work for the Red Morton
Center. Ms. Webber does not provide for the installation of the art work in
her contract and Supervisor Hannon is currently exploring the option of
having the art work installed by a contractor. Chairperson Piulle confirmed
that when the art work was purchased for the new Library, it was also
installed by a separate contractor. Supervisor Hannon noted the Commission
had budgeted $1,000.00 for the rental costs of a tent for the Peninsula
Symphony's summer concert. Since the tent is no longer needed for the
concert, the $1,000.00 is now available and could be used for the installation of
the art work. The costs for the installation would include architectural design
fees and installation supplies.
M/S Redington/Saye: To allot up to $1,000.00 for the installation of the Red
Morton Center Art Work and a plaque next to the art work
which will include the name of the Civic Cultural Comrnission.
Commissioner Filippi asked about the $30,000.00 raised by the Park and
Recreation Commission and Supervisor Hannc,n stated the funds are
