Civic Cultural Commission page 2 <br /> Minutes of September S, 1996 <br /> 2 grants; one for a musical entertainment at a BBQ and the other for a <br /> Christmas pops concert. The grant request for the BBQ is no longer needed <br /> due to the close proximity of the event date but they will would like funding <br /> for the concert. <br /> M/S Saye/Distefano: To grant$500.00 to Casa de Redwood. <br /> Motion passed. <br /> -Hoover School <br /> Hoover School 4th grade teacher Jesse Silverman explained he has worked <br /> the past several years with Hoover School students and parents to make <br /> semi-permanent tile murals for the school. The first year he received $500.00 <br /> to fund the project; the second year $2,500.00 was received from the Peninsula <br /> Community Foundation and the School District. Mr. Silverman explained <br /> last year over 500 students completed 14 murals and that the project was also <br /> integrated into their school curriculum. Hoover School parents were also <br /> involved in the murals and worked with him on Friday evenings. He stated <br /> the outcome of the project resulted in increased school pride and decreased <br /> vandalism at Hoover School and noted the murals have not been vandalized <br /> to date. Mr. Silverman mentioned he is pursuing different venues for <br /> funding for this year's mural project. <br /> M/S Redington/ : To grant $2,000.00 to the Hoover School mural project. <br /> Motion died for lack of a second. <br /> The Commissioners discussed giving their support to Mr. Silverman by <br /> approaching the School District for additional funding for the mural project. <br /> M/S Saye/Distefano: To grant $1,720.00 to the Hoover School mural project. <br /> Mr. Silverman explained the murals are not permanent due to the school <br /> undergoing modernization and the desire to be able to relocate the murals. <br /> Commissioner Britschgi invited Mr. Silverman to display the murals at the <br /> Redwood City Art Center. Mr. Silverman mentioned he applied for funding <br /> to Philanthropic Ventures but his grant request was set aside because the <br /> murals are not in public buildings. Chairperson Piulle offered the <br /> Commission's assistance in this matter. <br /> Motion passed. (Yes-4, No-2) <br /> M/S Saye/Redington: To have a representative of the Cultural Commission <br /> join Jesse Silverman in making an appeal to the School Board <br /> for additional funding for this project. <br /> Motion passed. <br />
