Civic Cultural Commission page 2 Minutes of September S, 1996 2 grants; one for a musical entertainment at a BBQ and the other for a Christmas pops concert. The grant request for the BBQ is no longer needed due to the close proximity of the event date but they will would like funding for the concert. M/S Saye/Distefano: To grant$500.00 to Casa de Redwood. Motion passed. -Hoover School Hoover School 4th grade teacher Jesse Silverman explained he has worked the past several years with Hoover School students and parents to make semi-permanent tile murals for the school. The first year he received $500.00 to fund the project; the second year $2,500.00 was received from the Peninsula Community Foundation and the School District. Mr. Silverman explained last year over 500 students completed 14 murals and that the project was also integrated into their school curriculum. Hoover School parents were also involved in the murals and worked with him on Friday evenings. He stated the outcome of the project resulted in increased school pride and decreased vandalism at Hoover School and noted the murals have not been vandalized to date. Mr. Silverman mentioned he is pursuing different venues for funding for this year's mural project. M/S Redington/ : To grant $2,000.00 to the Hoover School mural project. Motion died for lack of a second. The Commissioners discussed giving their support to Mr. Silverman by approaching the School District for additional funding for the mural project. M/S Saye/Distefano: To grant $1,720.00 to the Hoover School mural project. Mr. Silverman explained the murals are not permanent due to the school undergoing modernization and the desire to be able to relocate the murals. Commissioner Britschgi invited Mr. Silverman to display the murals at the Redwood City Art Center. Mr. Silverman mentioned he applied for funding to Philanthropic Ventures but his grant request was set aside because the murals are not in public buildings. Chairperson Piulle offered the Commission's assistance in this matter. Motion passed. (Yes-4, No-2) M/S Saye/Redington: To have a representative of the Cultural Commission join Jesse Silverman in making an appeal to the School Board for additional funding for this project. Motion passed.
