Civic Cultural Commission Page
Minutes of September S, 1996
Commissioners Britschgi and Saye will work with Mr. Silverman to assist
him in the appeal. Commissioners Britschgi (chair), Saye and Redington will
work on the Hoover Mural Project subcommittee.
-Peninsula Center Stage
Peter Bliznick stated the funds received from the City represent 10% of the
PCS operating budget. Last year PCS drew 18,200 paying customers into
Redwood City. He noted that 30% of their subscribers have a Redwood City
address as compared to only 24% with the Palo Alto Players. Commissioner
Ball felt there should be better recognition of the Commission on the PCS
brochure and Mr. Bliznick stated that each press releas mentions the
Cultural Commission in addition to the title page and the list of donors in
each program. Commissioner Britschgi commended PCS on their
performances and asked what the impact would be if the Commission
reduced their amount of funding to PCS. Mr. Bliznick said it would depend
on the reduction which he would have to take back to the PCS Board.
Paul Sanfilipo commented on the excellent performances by PCS and also
about difficulties several groups have encountered trying to rent the Fox
Theater. Police Officer Gilbert Granado spoke about a recent P.A.L.
fundraising event held at the Fox and serious concerns that he has about the
facility and the Fox event staff. PCS Artistic Director Dennis Lickteig spoke
about the participants' positive experiences at PCS. Commissioner Ball felt
there should be more cooperation between PCS and community
organizations when renting the Fox Theater. Commissioner Britschgi asked
if drama students could watch a PCS dress rehearsal and Mr. Bliznick stated
they currently give tours to all Redwood City 7th graders but he would be
willing to talk about this proposal. Mr. Bliznick mentioned that non-profit
organizations get a better rate than private companies renting the Fox and the
rates have not changed in 5 years. He said it costs $100,000 annually to operate
the Fox Theater and that non-profit rentals must cover normal operating
costs.
M/S Distefano/Ball: To grant $20,000.00 to the Peninsula Center Stage.
Roll Call Vote: Yes-2 (Ball, Distefano)
No-4 (Britschgi, Redington, Saye, Piulle)
Motion failed.
Chairperson Piulle mentioned that perhaps the Commission would consider
reducing their funding to PCS in the future.
M/S Britschgi/Saye: To grant $30,000.00 to the Peninsula Center Stage.
