� <br /> � <br /> Civic Cultura/Commission Page 2 <br /> Minutes of October 2, 1997 <br /> ORAL COMMUNICATIONS <br /> Ruth Waters, Chairperson of ArtShare, explained that ArtShare is a coalition <br /> of cultural groups whose mission is to support and strengthen grass roots <br /> arts groups throughout the County. The group has two major goals: a <br /> County Art Museum and a County Performing Arts Center. She spoke <br /> regarding trying to do both in the same building. Ms. Waters explained that <br /> the projects are really not appropriate to combine. Her group is currently <br /> considering a site in San Mateo or Redwood City. She shared the mission <br /> statement for the museum noting the current idea is to share space with the <br /> Historical Museum in the old Courthouse as all space will not be used in the <br /> first phase. The long term goal is to pursue the use of the 1939 Courthouse <br /> facing Broadway. Commissioners commented on the availability of the front <br /> or back of the Old Courthouse for this purpose.. <br /> ITEM 1 — LIBRARY PROGRAMS <br /> Library Supervisor Celia LaRiviere reported on library programs and also the <br /> upcoming Trivia Bee on Friday, October 17 at Canada College. <br /> ITEM 2 — GRANT REQUESTS <br /> -Kennedy School Drama Production <br /> Elena Mori spoke about her production of "Annie" to be held on April 17 or <br /> May 1 at Carrington Hall. She noted that half of the Kennedy population of <br /> 1,080 students are currently 6t'' graders and that the program will be double <br /> cast. Former students will also assist in the production. <br /> M/S Piulle/Redington: That the Commission grant S 1,500.00 to the Kennedy <br /> School Drama Production. <br /> Motion passed unanimously. <br /> Commissioner Britschgi asked about RESCUE's involvement with the <br /> Kennedy Drama Program. <br /> -Redwood City School District Instrumental Music Department <br /> Carol McNamara of the Instrumental Music Department of the Redwood City <br /> School District spoke regardinq� her goal of expanding the instrumental music <br /> program for the 6t'', 7tn, and 8t grade students at Kennedy and McKinley <br /> Schools and the 5�' graders at the other elementary schools. She noted that <br /> of the 300 participants in the program, 80% use district-owned instruments. <br /> The following is a breakdown by school year of instrument usage: <br /> 95-96 230 students interested/245 instruments available <br /> 96-97 245 students interested/255 instruments available <br /> 97-98 Interest is greater than instruments; up to 500 students <br /> interested <br /> Ms. McNamara reported that the 56,000.00 grant request is to purchase 21 <br /> instruments. An annual instrumental music festival will be held this year on <br /> Wednesday, May 6 at 7:30pm at McKinley Middle School. The <br /> Commissioners asked questions about how the instruments were distributed, <br /> RESCUE funds and their use in the District, overlaps of groups doing work in <br />
