Civic Cultura/Commission p89e 2 <br /> Minutes of November 6, 1997 , <br /> available, the spring show would need to be postponed and the theme <br /> changed. <br /> -Peninsula Celebration Association <br /> Bill Anderson of Peninsula Celebration Association (PCA) spoke regarding the <br /> request for funds from the PCA in support of the Tis the Season Parade. He <br /> spoke to the budget including the cost of the fireworks display. Comments <br /> from the Commission included whether the request supported entertainment <br /> or supporting equipment for the entertainers; and possible assistance from <br /> the PCA Foundation Board of Directors. Mr. Anderson responded that PCA <br /> became involved in the program based on its ability to provide in-kind rather <br /> than monetary support. He noted that the PCA Board is responsible for <br /> making investments to keep PCA alive; and pointed out that the Council had <br /> provided funds to make sure the Tis the Season project is accomplished. <br /> Loretta Knight, a member of Tis the Season Committee, spoke in support of <br /> the request noting it will encourage participation at other Tis the Season <br /> events and support entertainers. Bob Slusser, Park and Recreation <br /> Commissioner, spoke regarding the amount of personal time and resources <br /> donated to this "community" effort. Beverly Schutz-Morgan, producer of the <br /> post.parade performance, stated the group had learned from last year's event <br /> and that the fireworks would make it the only such event on the peninsula. <br /> John Holt spoke regarding: the Cultural Commission's sponsorship of the Tis <br /> the Season program; the potential draw of fireworks; the desire to make this <br /> a regular Redwood City tradition; the need for support from the Commission <br /> for the first few years of the event; the regular meetings of the Committee <br /> since May; the numerous volunteers involved in the project; and his sense <br /> that Council had provided an additional 55,000 to the Commission only for <br /> support of Tis the Season activities. <br /> In response to Commission questions and comments, Mr. Anderson <br /> explained that the Jefferson underpass construction had impacted the parade <br /> route. Mr. Holt spoke regarding the Police Departments involvement in <br /> setting the route. Chairperson Ball stated the route of the parade will be <br /> discussed at the November 12 Tis the Season Committee meeting and the <br /> need for PCA to work with the Police Department on this subject. She also <br /> discussed the three weeks of events of the Tis the Season program. She <br /> shared that the events will also appear in the AAA's "Via" magazine. Loretta <br /> Knight spoke about the route of the parade and possible compromises. She <br /> stated that one downtown merchant has agreed to do a "Teddy Bear" drive <br /> on the night of the parade and pictures with Santa. The Optimist Club is <br /> taking out an ad in the Almanac and the Tribune in support of the program. <br /> Loretta Knight spoke about the proposed advertising budget for Tis the <br /> Season and noted that she has arranged for free PSA's, and use of the Bay <br /> Meadows lighted sign on Highway 101 . <br /> M/S Piulle/Redington: To not provide funds to the Redwood City School <br /> District Instrumental Music Department and to send a letter to <br /> them expressing the Commission's regrets of not being able to <br /> grant the funds. <br /> Motion passed unanimously. <br />
