Civic Cultura! Commission page 2
Minutes of February 6, 1997
CORRESPONDENCE
Commissioner Ball reviewed a variety of correspondence related to
upcoming cultural events.
A letter was received from Barbara Pierce of RESCUE regarding working
together with the Commission to develop arts in the schools programs.
M/S Filippi/Saye: To establish a RESCUE sub-committee to pursue this
effort.
Motion passed.
Commissioners Filippi (chair), Ball and Saye will work on this sub-
committee.
Chairperson Piulle received a request from San Mateo County Health
Services for a representative from the Cultural Commission to serve on a
committee which meets related to an annual poetry and art contest for
seniors. The Commissioners agreed to contact the Chairperson if they were
able to participate.
Superintendent Centeno reported that each Commission has received a
packet containing a new City roster, meeting notes and a draft invitation to
the Red Morton Center Anniversary and Tapestry Dedication, and the
Summer Concert Series schedule.
ITEM 1-LIBRARY PROGRAMS
This item will be deferred to the March meeting.
ITEM 2- COMMUNITY SCHOOL FOR MUSIC AND THE ARTS
Andrea Temkin, Executive Director for Community School for Music and the
Arts located in Mountain View, spoke to the Commission on their
partnership with the City and School District to bring arts in the schools. The
Community School started in 1968 with two areas of focus: low cost music
lessons and a visual arts program. The school now has a budget of over
$lmillion and serves 6,000 Mountain View students from three school
districts. In addition, they provide 550 music lessons, a visual arts after school
program, and concerts. Chairperson Piulle thanked Ms. Temkin for her
presentation stating the Commission wants the see the arts returned to
schools and that Community School represents a successful partnership
model to emulate.
