Civic Cultural Commission page 2
Minutes of March 6, 1997
ITEM 1 - LIBRARY PROGRAMS
Library Supervisor Celia LaRivere reviewed the activities being held at the
Library during the month of March. The Library events flyer for March is
attached to the minutes.
Commissioner Saye thanked the Library for offering their showcases for the
display of various collections. Chairperson Ball suggested recognizing the
Library at our June meeting for their continued support .
M/S Filippi/Britschgi: To honor the Library at our june meeting.
Motion passed.
Supervisor LaRivere announced that Library Director Jane Light has accepted
the position of director of the San Jose Public Library and her last day will be
March 21. Ned Himmel will be the acting director in her absence.
ITEM 2 - GRANT REQUEST - KIWANIS FARMERS MARKET
Eddie Rosenstiel of the Kiwanis Club spoke to his request for funding musical
entertainment at the Farmers Market. Mr. Rosenstiel explained that other
cities are now offering farmers markets and as a result, there is considerable
competition from surrounding cities. He stated the Kiwanis group is
interested in bringing more people to their Farmers Market and have
developed many new ideas to increase attendance. One of their ideas is to
have live music performances on four Saturdays between the end of May and
the beginning of July which is the reason behind their grant request of
$1,200.00.
Various Commissioners asked questions about location, previous attempts to
have concerts at the market and other ideas for entertainment. Mr.
Rosenstiel explained that a governmental report which surveyed
other farmers markets from all over California stated that people visit these
events for the produce, the prices and the ambiance. The report showed that
the farmers markets which were the most successful had other activities.
Mr. Rosenstiel said the Kiwanis group has developed a full schedule of
events for this year's Farmers Market which will include "Meet Redwood
City", fingerprinting children, and a punch card for frequent patrons of the
Farmers Market. They also plan on advertising their weekly events in the
Redwood City Tribune and in their "Farmers Almanac" handout.
M/S Filippi/Piulle: To deny the grant request from the Kiwanis Farmers
Market.
Motion passed. (Yes-5, No-2, Britschgi, Saye)
