Civic Cultural Commission August 7, 1997
Minutes 2
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
Henry Use distributed copies of a written report and commented on
effectiveness of the Commission's $8,350 grant for the NOTES Program. He
responded to questions regarding the relationship of this program to attempt to
have more music and art teachers in the schools; cost per pupil for the program;
teacher training and advertisement of the school performances.
At Mr. Use's request the Commission agreed to write a letter to Pacific Sticks
Percussion Ensemble asking them to contact Kollage prior to setting dates with
schools to avoid duplication. Mr. Use commented that his organization was
working closely with both RESCUE, Peninsula Youth Symphony and the
Redwood City School District to coordinate programs. Mr. Use noted he would
send flyers to the Commission on the Tapestry of Talent Festival being held in
Downtown San Jose over the Labor Day weekend.
ITEM 1 LIBRARY PROGRAMS
Corinne Centeno reported that Library personnel were unable to attend the
meeting but had requested that time be set aside at the September meeting for
the new Library Director Yvonne Chen to introduce herself to the Commission.
Commissioners asked staff to extend an invitation to Ms. Chen.
ITEM 2 CONSIDERATION OF GRANT REQUESTS
Chairperson Ball asked Commissioner Piulle to take over chairing the meeting
as she had lost her voice.
a. Redwood City International
Daniela Devencenzi, President of Redwood City International answered
questions regarding the grant request to support art exhibitions and
performances at Canada College for a "Tri Sister City" program, including the
extent of fundraising among corporations; the reasons for charging admission to
the art exhibit; the uses of funds raised at Sister City events; the status of Colima
Mexico as a sister city; and a potential grant from the Peninsula Community
Foundation Neighborhood Grants Program to purchase a block of tickets to the
Canada performance. Ms. Devencenzi expressed her concern that so little
funding remained available just a few weeks into the fiscal year.
Commissioners provided their observations regarding the funding process.
b. Vintage Music Theater
Mr. McKenna responded to questions and spoke regarding volunteer activities
his band would be involved with during the month of December. He noted that
one of the guest artists had indicated he would be unable to attend so that the
amount requested should be reduced by $1,500. Mr. McKenna shared
information regarding the Disney Corporation's refurbishment of several historic
theaters in New York City and the positive impact this was having on the
neighborhood. In response to questions from the Commission, Mr. McKenna
noted that the Commission could postpone a decision on his grant request until
word regarding additional funding from Council was available.
