Civic Cultura/Commission pa9e 2 '' <br /> Minutes of January 8, 1998 <br /> M/S Distefano/Saye: To endorse the concept of the "Music is Instrumentai" <br /> Program in order to meet the need of instruments in the <br /> Redwood City School District via the RESCUE Program. <br /> Motion passed unanimously. <br /> CORRESPONDENCE <br /> Commissioner Distefano reviewed various newsletters and correspondence <br /> received by the Commission including: <br /> -A notice for a public hearing with the Park and Recreation Commission to be <br /> held on January 28 in order to review the conceptual designs for Stafford <br /> and Stulsaft Park. The meeting will be held at the Red Morton Center at <br /> 8:OOpm. <br /> -A letter from Lua Hadar inviting the Commission to a 2"d grade student <br /> performance at McKinley School. <br /> -A flyer for a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on January 15 at 5:OOpm at <br /> City Hall. <br /> -Two arts newsletters from the San Mateo County Arts Council. <br /> ITEM 1 — LIBRARY PROGRAMS <br /> Library Supervisor Celia LaRiviere spoke about January Library activities. A <br /> copy of the January Library activities is attached to the minutes. <br /> ITEM 2 — UPDATE REPORT FROM REDWOOD CITY EDUCATION <br /> FOUNDATION AND KOLLAGE COMMUNITY SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS <br /> The Commissioners received a report from RESCUE and Kollage regarding <br /> their grant use. Chairperson Ball thanked Barbara Pierce for her background <br /> materials, the community support, mentioning the Cultural Commission in <br /> their materials, and the support from the State Superintendent of Education. <br /> Lynn Hilferty of Kollage spoke about the following: <br /> -NOTES is going well; all schools are scheduled in the next 2 weeks; one <br /> change is the new GATE school is included. <br /> -Next week training is starting with teachers in the School District on how to <br /> add music in their regular classroom activities. <br /> -The evaluation tool sent to teachers showed marked improvement in non- <br /> English speaking students. <br /> -The dance program started by the Cultural Commission is ongoing at John <br /> Gill School but is no longer taught by Rosine Bena; Ms. Bena is now teaching <br /> at Orion School. <br /> -Kollage is in the process of doing an evaluation of teachers, students' <br /> journals and parents regarding the Music for Learning Program. A copy of <br /> the teacher evaluations were distributed. <br />
