Minutes of the Civic Cultura!Commission Page 2
Thursday,July 2, 1998
RESCUE is the umbrella organization for Music is Instrumental and they have
donated funds for the repair of instruments. Dr. Filippi responded to
Commissioner Saye that savings are achieved when repairs are done by school
staff. Commissioner Redington asked for information on whether instruments will
be used at the beginning of the school year.
M/S Britschgi/Saye: To hear all small grants prior to any funding recommendations.
Motion passed.
-Sequoia Art Group
David McClure spoke about the $325.00 grant for the Sequoia Art Group which
provides cash awards for the Spring Art Show. He noted that the Cultural
Commission is advertised in their brochure. This year there were 120 entries
from high school students. Commissioner Saye asked how the Sequoia Art
Group could better advertise the art show and how avidly the group has sought
individual support for the awards. Mr. McClure noted the show has a 35 year
history and all artists look forward to the annual show. Commissioner Britschgi
asked if the Sequoia Art Group works with the Redwood City Art Center and Mr.
McClure mentioned that many of the artists are members of both groups.
-Kiwanis Farmer's Market
Dr. Norm Shapiro thanked the Commission for their past support. He noted that
having music at the Farmer's Market keeps it competitive. The rent from the
Farmer's Market goes to low income children and high school students. This
year's grant request is for$900.00 with a minimum request of$800.00.
Commissioner Distefano commented that the music is only heard if you are right
in front of the musicians and suggested some strolling musicians. Commissioner
Britschgi said she has heard only compliments on the addition of the music at the
Farmer's Market. It was noted that almost all farmer's markets have some type
of entertainment.
-Casa de Redwood
Pete Hughes said he appreciated the concert series and the seniors appreciate
the two winter concerts which are open to the public. The residents of Casa de
Redwood are encouraged to attend the concerts located on the 7' floor
penthouse of the facility. The Bob Stiff Band and the Canada College Big Band
are scheduled to perform.
M/S Distefano/Redington: To grant $999.00 to "Music is Instrumental".
Motion passed. (Yes-3 Ball, Distefano, Redington; No-2 Britschgi, Saye)
M/S Britschgi/Redington: To grant $325.00 to the Sequoia Art Group.
Motion passed unanimously.
M/S Redington/Britschgi: To grant $900.00 to for the Kiwanis Farmer's market.
Motion passed.
