Minutes of fhe Civic Culfural Commission Page 3
Thursday,July 2, 1998
M/S Distefano/Redington: To grant $500.00 to Casa de Redwood.
Motion passed unanimously.
The meeting was recessed at 7:30pm and called back to order at 7:40pm.
ITEM 2 — DISCUSSION OF BUDGET COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION FOR
LARGE GRANT REQUESTS PRESENTED JUNE 1998
The Commissioners were reminded that the large grant presentations were made
last month and there was no need to repeat the presentation process.
Superintendent Centeno reviewed the request by Mayor Howard and
Councilman Jeff Ira for a meeting with representatives of the Commission to
discuss the funding for the Fox Theater.
Warren Dale proposed a one year study to look at comparative data from other
cities such as San Jose, Mountain View and San Mateo to determine how much
support is given to theater arts; the funding per capita, percentage of rise, sales
tax to city, cost per day to open a facility, how many dates are open for rental,
etc. Chairperson Ball stated she worked on the Fox Theater Task Force for five
years and did not think a study was necessary.
Superintendent Centeno reviewed the chart itemizing each grant request, the
minimum and maximum amount requested and the various granting alternatives
the Commission could consider. She explained that the chart was just a
beginning for the Commissioners to discuss how to allocate the funds they had
available for the large grant process.
M/S Redington/Britschgi: To recommend Alternative #1.
It was noted that Vintage Music Theater's grant was not considered because it
arrived after the application deadline. Commissioner Distefano felt less money
should be given to the Fox Theater and more money given to other groups.
Commissioner Britschgi felt more money should be given to the Fox and less to
other groups. The Commissioners discussed how to allocate the available grant
funds which exceeded the grant requests received. Commissioner Redington
suggested delaying the decision on the large grants until after the new Civic
Cultural Commissioners are seated and suggested setting up a sub-committee to
look at Warren Dale's suggestions. Commissioner Saye agreed with
Commissioner Britschgi's viewpoint that the Fox Theater should be granted more
that their request last year. It was suggested that the large grant decision be
placed on the September agenda and to set-up a sub-committee to meet with
City Council representatives.
Motion passed. (Yes-3 Ball, Redington, Saye; No-2 Britschgi, Distefano).
