Civic Cultura/Commission Page 2
Minutes of August 6, 1998
Superintendent Centeno mentioned the Commissioners received an invitation
to the Senior Afifairs Commission luncheon on September 1 at 1 :OOpm at
Caffe Amore; please respond by August 25 if interested.
ITEM 1 — SMALL GRANT REQUESTS
-Redwood Symphony
Claudia Herzog of Redwood Symphony thanked the Commission for their
previous grant of 52,000.00 given in December 1996 for a featured soloist
for one of their concerts. This current grant request will be for a family
concert which will be offered as part of Redwood Symphony's regular
concert series. The grant will support a soloist "storyteller" and also provide
a block of tickets to children who would not normally be able to attend the
performance. The family concert will include a tour of the orchestra, give the
children an opportunity to conduct the symphony; and the musicians will
speak to the audience about their instruments and how they became
musicians. Ms. Herzog stated Redwood Symphony has their performances
at Canada College; they have a website and a mailing list with subscribers,
and are looking for ways to promote their concerts.
-Vintage Music Theatre
Bill McKenna of Vintage Music Theatre thanked the Commission for its
previous grant support. He noted he missed the deadline for the large grant
process and was planning on having a musical featuring Martha Eggert. He
is now presenting another grant application to support a musical performance
honoring the music of Vincent Youmans and George Gershwin, and will
feature baritone Julian Patrick. Mr. McKenna said he has reserved Carrington
Hall for this performance but the date will not be confirmed by Sequoia until
late in August. Jeff Filippi noted Mr. McKenna has provided master classes
for Redwood city elementary schools and has also participated in the Tis the
Season program of events.
Superintendent Centeno noted Mr. McKenna's grant application is for 54,500
with a minimum request of $2,500. She reminded the Commission that it
developed and approved a new grant process for fiscal year 1998-1999 and
reviewed the entire process with the Commissioners. She noted that Mr.
McKenna's grant request is actually a large grant request and the large grants
were voted on at the July meeting.
Chairperson Ball spoke about the Tis the Season participants and that several
of them will not be coming to the Commission for grants. She asked if this
performance could be considered as part of the Tis the Season program. She
noted the balance of the John Raitt Fund was S 1,372.00.
M/S Redington/Distefano: To grant 5990.000 to the Redwood Symphony.
Motion passed unanimously.
M/S Distefano/ : To grant 52,500.00 to Vintage Music Theatre.
Motion died due to lack of a second.
Commissioner Redington suggested granting Vintage Music Theatre 5999.00
from the small grant fund and S 1,500.00 from the Commission-sponsored
event fund. Superintendent Centeno explained the history of the new grant
