Civic Cultural Commission Page 2 <br /> Minutes of September 3, 1998 <br /> insert wiil appear on September 16t'' in the Independent using the Courthouse <br /> logo. It contains information about the Optimist organization and its 52 year <br /> history. Festival proceeds constitute 25% of their total budget. Last year's <br /> attendance was about 10,000-12,000 people. Optimists are attempting to <br /> get some local entertainment groups to fill in other spaces. The <br /> entertainment booking agent does San Jose Jazz Festival every year. Mr. <br /> Holt confirmed that the "Taste of the Shores" will be held the weekend prior <br /> to the Climate Best Fest. The Sunflower Festival is not a conflict. He noted <br /> that events for children would include a 4-H petting zoo and PAL Boxing in <br /> the "Way to Go" building. Last year's profit on the festival was 53,700 and <br /> the highest ever profit was 55,200. The club is attempting to increase the <br /> ethnic diversity of the festival. <br /> -Vintage Music Theater <br /> Bill McKenna of Vintage Music Theater noted that they were late with their <br /> application and as a result changed the theme from "Salute to 42"d Avenue" <br /> to a centennial tribute to George Gershwin and Vincent Youmans. He has a <br /> commitment from Carrington Hall for December 18 and 19. He would prefer <br /> the event to be held after January 1 , but the facility is not available for the <br /> first two weeks in December. Canada College is only available on December <br /> 12. Mr. Julian Patrick, a noted baritone, will be able to perform so there is a <br /> need for additional funds. He noted that the majority of the orchestra are <br /> seniors. Vintage Music Theater does other performances throughout the <br /> community, generally up to four dances and/or performances per year. They <br /> volunteered to take part in the Tis the Season program and school projects. <br /> Expected attendance is 850 total for both performances. Vintage Music <br /> Theater has a mailing list of 3,000 names to which they mail. He noted <br /> there is one Redwood City resident on the board and several residents in the <br /> orchestra. They are seeking S 1 ,500 in additional funds. Vintage Music <br /> Theater will also be willing to return funds to the Commission if the program <br /> is a success. Commissioner Dale noted that the grant would constitute a <br /> 53.00 ticket subsidy for this event. <br /> M/S Schenone/Britschgi: To grant 5500.00 to the Optirr�ist Club. <br /> Commissioner Dale spoke in support of the motion noting the festival brings <br /> 10,000 people to downtown Redwood City; the event can relate to many <br /> neighborhoods, ages, etc.; and it enables youth performances. <br /> Commissioner Schenone saw the need to better coordinate all the festivals in <br /> Redwood City. <br /> Motion passed. (Yes-5, No-0, Abstention-1; Redington is on board of <br /> Optimist Club) <br /> Lettie Distefano spoke on behalf of Vintage Music Theater and their donation <br /> of time to Redwood City Schools and in support of their S 1,500 grant. <br /> M/S Dale/DelCarlo: To grant Vintage Music Theater $1,000 of Commission- <br /> sponsored event funds and 5500.00 from the John Raitt fund; and if there <br /> was a profit from the event, that it would be returned to the John Raitt fund. <br /> Commissioner Dale spoke to the motion and its impact on the senior <br /> population and the significance of returning any profit to the John Raitt fund. <br />
