Civic Cultura!Commission Page 2
Minutes of December 2, 1999
Hali with benches, additional lighting and signage, and noted that she wiii be
requesting funding for this project: Director Nelson stated she is interested
public artgn and around City,Hall. Sfie sp cificatTy=viranted fo incl ement of
in workin with the Commission to develo tandarcis for the ? uae tf
e
memonals in front of the facil►ty. She explamed she would like to research
what public art standards neighboring cities have developed and bring back
this information to the Commissionin January.
Director Nelson also spoke about the new banners placed in the downtown
area and the need to re-visit the City's banner policy for non-profits to hang
banners on Broadway. She also suggested that the Commission develop a
flyer showing the location of all cultural facilities and public art in Redwood
City. .
There was discussion about current and future gifts received from the Sister
City program and their placement. Pa.ula Uccelli spoke about wanting
visibility of the jade ship. Andy Fisch noted tha# the jade ship should not be
treated in the same way as other sister city gits'since it was specifically
given to the City in honor of our new City Hall. Director Nelson stated that
one possible focation was in the foyer of the City Council Chambers; a
location used by many cities for gifts from their Sister Cities.
Chairperson Redington asked Director Nelson if the jade ship could be moved
to the first floor location immediately and the Commission would continue to
work on standards for the location of public art in City Hall. Director Nelson
said she woufd like to put a model in the proposed location to see how the
jade ship would look there before it was relocated. Superintendent Centeno
confirmed that the consensus of the group was that the jade ship needs to
be given a more prominent place. Chairperson Redington agreed and also felt
there was consensus on upgrading the art gallery upstairs; purchasing display
cases; setting up criteria for future Sister city gifts; and banner criteria.
Paula Uccelli felt that if the Jade ship were placed in the foyer to the Council
Chambers, then only people coming to the Council meetings would get the
see the art piece. Director Nelson suggested drafting a plan that would take
in future placement rather than dealing with each gift or acquisition
separately.
Superintendent Centeno explained that Director Nelson will have some
architectural drawings prepared and determine how the art piece will be
attached to the wall in the event of an earthquake, and staff will look into
what it is going to take to relocate the jade ship to another location. This
matter will be discussed at the January meeting when we will have more
information. Paula Uccelli and Andy Frisch were invited to come to the
January meeting.
