Civic Cultural Commission Page 2 <br /> Minutes of May 6, 1999 <br /> Commissioner Dale suggested having Supervisor LaRivere come back in three <br /> months to evaluate if this process works. <br /> ITEM 2 - GRANT REQUESTS <br /> -Taft Healthy Start Mano-a-Mano Festival <br /> Manuel Santamaria of the Taft Healthy Start Program spoke about their grant <br /> request of $900.00 which would fund four different performing groups at <br /> Taft's multi-cultural event to be held on Sunday, May 16. The event will be <br /> a fundraiser to provide school supplies to students, fund after school <br /> homework programs, and outdoor education programs for 5t'' graders. <br /> Commissioner Saye said he could help with newspaper advertising of the <br /> program; Commissioner Da(e felt it was a positive community event; <br /> Chairperson Redington asked if the Cultural Commission would be recognized <br /> as a sponsor of the event. <br /> -Sequaia Qrt Group <br /> Eddie Rasenstiel of the Sequoia Art Group (SAG) spoke about the group's <br /> scheduled art sale on Sunday, August 15 at the Community Activities <br /> Building. He said the grant request of $250.00 was to provide advertising <br /> for the event; the budget far the event is 5500.00 and the SAG would cover <br /> the difference. <br /> Chairperson Redington stated that the Commission would defer action on the <br /> funding requests until after Item 3 - Sub-Committee Reports. <br /> fTEM 3 - SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS <br /> Children and Youth - Schenone <br /> In the absence of Commissioner Schenone, Superintendent Centeno reported <br /> that the Commissioners and two additional judges should complete their <br /> judging of the art work by Friday, May 7, 1999. Commissioner Schenone <br /> has secured three judges for the poetry from amang loca! language arts <br /> teachers. Their judging should be completed by Monday, May 10t''. One of <br /> these judges is able to read, judge and translate the Spanish language entries <br /> received. The ceremony is set for Wednesday, June 2"d in the City Council <br /> Chambers at City Hall. Commissioner Dale noted that he had secured 10 <br /> games from Electronic Arts to be distributed as prizes in the contest; he also <br /> suggested sending some of the art work to our Sister City in China. <br /> Superintendent Centeno indicated she would ask the winners for their <br /> permission in our letter of congratulations. Chairperson Redington asked that <br /> a program be set up indicating which Commissioners would be responsible <br /> for presenting which awards. <br /> CCC Sponsored Events - Del Carlo <br /> Commissioner Del Carlo reported that she had missed the last Tis the Season <br /> meeting because of a change in its date. She raised the issue of the Cultural <br /> Commission's relation to the program. It was agreed that staff would invite <br /> former Commission Chairperson Ball to attend our meeting in July for a <br /> discussion of the matter. <br /> Planning - Pierce <br /> No report. <br />
