Civic Cultual Commission Page 2
Minutes of Decembe 7, 2000
ITEM 2 — UPDATE ON STANFORD DIGITAL ART PR07ECT
Professor Greg Niemeyer gave an update on the art project funded by the
Commission earlier this year. He reported that $3,500 was raised for the
project, which included the Commission grant of $2,500, and $2,400 was
spent, leaving a balance of $1,100. He stated that the grant was originally to
fund large historical posters of Redwood City on bus stops at Sequoia Station
and historical postcards. Unfortunately, the owners of the bus stops would
not approve the project, so a series of historical postcards of Redwood City
were produced and distributed around the city. He also explained about the
proposed project with senior and junior members of the community which
was stalled at the high school level and Senior Center.
Professor Niemeyer announced that UPS has agreed to fund his digital art
course for the next five years. He said that Redwood City does not have any
dedicated surfaces for public art which makes hard when trying to display
public art. He suggested using the remaining $1,100 to fund a project which
will display projected subjects of a particular theme on walls or buildings in
Redwood City. His next class will begin in January 2001 and end in March
and he would like to have this be a project for those students. Chairperson
Britschgi suggested using the wall of the Fox Theater for this project.
Commissioner Soultanian suggested using the public window at the Redwood
City Art Center. Professor Niemeyer stated he would like to have the
Commission's support when he contacts the owner of the Fox Theater to
obtain permission. He stated he would like to have his students make a
presentation at the February Commission meeting and asked to be placed on
the agenda.
ITEM 3 — NOMINATION AND ELECTION OF OFFICERS FOR 2001
Chairperson Britschgi suggested delaying the election of officers until the
January meeting because three Commissioners were not in attendance. The
Commissioners discussed the matter and decided to do the election at this
evening's meeting.
M/S Ball/Soultanian: To re-elect Warren Dale as vice chairperson
and Barbara Britschgi as chairperson of the Civic Cultural
Commission for 2001.
Motion passed unanimously.
ITEM 4 — SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS
-Budget
No report.
