... .... _. _ ........_ -°--'-• -'......---•-•• r aaC J
Thursday,May 4,2000
Ehth Grade(Spanish)
1 Place Ginelle Curincita, Kennedy
2nd Place Adrian Martinez, Kennedy
Hawes School was presented with a $100.00 cash prize for the school having the
most entries in the contest. Commissioner Schenone, the Art and Poetry
Contest Chairperson thanked the student winners for their excellent
contributions, the parents for their support, and the staff for their behind the
scenes work. All of the attendees were invited to attend a reception in the lobby
with cookies and punch as well as a group picture.
The meeting was recessed at 7:25 p.m. and was reconvened at 8:00 p.m.
The following items were taken out of order:
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
Debbi Jones Thomas of the Community Development Department reported that
the water feature for Civic Center Plaza that the Commission had endorsed had
been recommended for funding to the Council. She encouraged the
Commissioners to come and provide support at the upcoming Council meeting.
ITEM 3 - DIGITAL ART PRESENTATION
Professor Niemeyer introduced the concept of digital art and introduced four of
his students who had each prepared a theme for use in the a public art program
in Redwood City. The Commission was asked to listen to each presentation and
then select one theme which they felt would be of most interest. Funds are
available to produce one theme at no cost to the City.
Student Jamil Gordon described a theme of youth and seniors, two important
segments in Redwood City. He would use the Redwood City 2000 quality of life
indicators as a basis for the creation of his posters.
Student Joe Gross noted all of the changes to downtown and relayed that his
posters would deal with the upcoming cinema project by producing old theater
images blending into pictures of residents. His concept is "film is us".
Student Lea Wensly would create posters building on the City's Quality of Life
Index. She would contrast the elements of the plan with what currently exists to
give more publicity to the index and its goals. .
Student John -- felt that Redwood City had a strong sense of history and he
wanted to raise awareness of this aspect of the City by creating posters that
would mirror the old as we develop the new history in the City.
There was a general discussion of the pros and cons of various projects; each
theme will cost approximately $5,000 to develop, produce and install the art
work.
