Civic Cultural Commission p8ye Z <br /> Minutes of June f, 2000 <br /> OftAL CO MUNICATIO�IS <br /> Andy Frisch of Redwood City International thanked the Commission for the <br /> grant which helped provide entertainment for their Cinco de Mayo event. He <br /> reported that the event was a tremendous success and over 120 peopfe were <br /> in attendance. He aiso thanked the Commission for their work on the re- <br /> location of the jade ship and was pleased witf� the resolution. He also noted <br /> that four interns from Zhuhai, China have arrived for a one month <br /> educational visit. <br /> T'�"�M i — GRANT REQUESTS <br /> -Koltage <br /> Lynn Hilferty explained that as of October 1, 1999, Kollage is now an <br /> independent non-profit organization and is receiving funding directly from <br /> each city. She announced that Kollage serves 9,000 families with its <br /> programs and 75% are Redwood City residents. She spoke about the various <br /> types of programs Kollage offers and stated their grant request of $5,000 will <br /> be to provide operational support. <br /> - or�hStar Academy <br /> Neva Hutchinson spoke about NorthStar's pfanned productions of"Macbeth" <br /> and �Oliver° and two outreach prod�ctions which will be offered to Redwood <br /> City schools and senior citizens. The grant request of $3,800 is to cover <br /> salaries of the instructors for both productions. <br /> -Peninsula Baltet Theatre <br /> Anada Bena-Weber stated their grant request of $1,500 is for funding of the <br /> Mini-N�tcracker to be held at Carrington Ha{i in conjunction with the Tis the <br /> Season Program. Last year's Mini-Nutcracker had an attendance of 425 <br /> people, included lots of seniors and children and was welt received. <br /> -Redwood City Education Foundation <br /> Bn�ce Codding, Board Member of the Foundation, spoke about their grant <br /> request of $15,000 and gave some history about the group. He explained <br /> that the grant provides funding for the "Music for Learning" program which is <br /> done in collaboration with Kollage and provides 30 weeks of classes in all <br /> Redwood City schoots. The cost of the program is $200,000 and the School <br /> District normally funds $100,000 of the cost. This year, in order to provide a <br /> salary increase to teachers, the funding was cut to $50,000. Mr. Codding <br /> explained they are continuing to apply for grants from other sources and <br /> have an annual fundraiser which brings in additional funds. <br /> -Redwood Symphony <br /> Eric Kujawski thanked the Commissioners for tast year's grant which funded <br /> '�Porgy and Bess".
