Civic Cultura!Commisslon p8ge 2
Minutes of August 3, 2000
not on the agenda, this item was placed on the August agenda for further
discussion. Superintendent Centeno explained that in 1999, the concerts
were moved to Red Morton Park due to the construction. In 1998 and l997
the concerts were held at Stafford; ln 1996 and prior years, the concerts
were rotated to different parks around the city. The Commission decided in
1996 to move the concerts to one (ocation in order to increase concert
attendance. She noted that we have only two concerts remaining and the
Commissioners need to decide this evening if they wish to keep the two
concerts at Stafford or move them to another location. She also noted that
on a long term basis, the Commissioners needed to decide the location of
2001 concert series. She also spoke about the interim use policy in effect at
Stafford.
Commissioner Britschgt stated that she has friends who live on Lowell and
King Streets who are in favor of leavng the concerts at Stafford Park and
suggested that the Commtssion do a survey of surrounding neighbors before
the Commission takes action on this item. Commissioner Saye agreed with
Commissioner Britschgi's suggestions and felt the Commission should have
spoken with the neighbors pror to having the concerts at Stafford.
Commissioner Det Carlo felt that the two remaining concerts should continue
at Stafford since all advertisements have been pubtished with the location
and it would be dfficult to get the information out in time. Commissioner
Dale agreed that the last two concerts should remain at Stafford and that the
Commission shoufd work with local neighborhood to get their feedback and to
look at other locations for future concerts. Commtssioner Britschgi noted
that when other cities have evening events, they provide theater tickets to
residents who live near the event location so they are not negatively
impacted. Commissioner Saye suggested having the Commission set-up a
public relations/information desk at the Farmers Market where concert
surveys could be collected. Commissioner Dale suggested putting off the
long term decision until after the two concerts are over.
Dick Clark noted that weekends are the worst at Stafford Park, but he has
seen a dramatic improvement since the interim poiicy was instituted and
further amended to eliminate BBQs from being brought in by park patrons.
Commissioner Britschgi mentioned there will be four new commissioners
beginning in September and they needed to be brought up to date on this
matter and shou(d be part of the decision making process.
M/S Dale/Saye: To continue the two remaining concerts a Stafford
Park with the idea of monitoring tMe poliry and at conclusion, having
a discussion with neighbors and prepaing a study to look at
comparable faciiities for the 001 concert series.
Niotion passed unanimously.
Superintendent Centeno asked for Mr. Clark's phone number so she could
contact him to keep him apprised of the sltuation.
