Minutes of the Civic Cultural Commissfon Page 2 <br /> Thursday,July 5, 2001 <br /> Newsletters from: <br /> • Arts Council of San Mateo County <br /> • San Mateo County Historical Association <br /> • Veterans Memorial Senior Center and Fun After Fifty <br /> • Peninsula Civic Light Opera <br /> ORAL COMMUNICATIONS <br /> • Matias Varela, of the Arts Council of San Mateo County distributed <br /> materials and spoke about the Council's Strategic Plan process. He noted <br /> that a Plan had not been developed in over twenty years and that San <br /> Mateo was the only Bay Area County who had not completed such a plan. <br /> They have hired a consultant who recently completed the Santa Cruz <br /> County plan. Preliminary study indicates that the lack of facilities is the <br /> biggest problem facing San Mateo County. He stated he was here to <br /> follow up on a recommendation of the organizing committee to invite <br /> leaders in the Arts Community to attend a meeting on July 10 from 11:30 <br /> to 1:30 at the Manor House in Twin Pines Park with the consultant to plan <br /> on next steps. Mr. Varela responded to questions on the availability of the <br /> San Mateo PerForming Arts Center as well as Carrington Hall and the Fox <br /> Theater. Commissioner pouglas agreed to attend the meeting on behalf <br /> of the Commission. <br /> • Tamara Piulle, spoke regarding the past practice of having local artists <br /> provide the cover for the Redwood City Citywide, the Parks, Recreation <br /> and Community Services Department Quarte�ly Brochure. She <br /> encouraged the Commission to request that the department revert to this <br /> practice. <br /> ITEM 1 —MURAL ON CITY WATER TANK SITE <br /> Tamara Piulle, spoke about the development of a child-care center in the Shores <br /> adjacent the City's Water Tank A and encouraged the Commission to consider <br /> the placement of a mural on the tank. She noted that the developer was <br /> considering a chain link fence with vines to obstruct the view of the tank. She <br /> believes that a mural on the tank would be a much better altemative. Ms. Piulle <br /> noted that the Commission also needed a project in connection with in lieu fees <br /> that could be generated by the proposed public art ordinance. <br /> ITEM 2 — SPONSORSHIP OF MARTIN LUTHER KING ESSAY CONTEST <br /> Director Centeno explained that the Department, through the Human Services <br /> Section, has worked with community groups to sponsor an event honoring the <br /> legacy of Dr. King on an annual basis. The group would like to add an essay <br /> contest and would like the Commission to consider sponsorship. This would <br /> likely include assistance with judging and other duties.
