6.1.C. - Page 3
monitoring and reassessments. It is anticipated that RCSD Wellness Coordinator will
assist with survey execution and data collection. Data will be used to measure program
quality and impact, share outcome information with stakeholders, make necessary
modifications, and use best practices to cultivate and expand program.
Goal 6: Sustainability: Program is designed to assure positive changes are sustained.
Goal 7: Program Growth: In coordination with PCC, the program is expected to expand
to all 14 elementary schools by year 3 with financial contributions from additional
sources.
ANALYSIS
Due to State budget cuts to the Redwood City School District (RCSD), incredibly hard
choices were made and ultimately physical education teachers were eliminated at most
RCSD schools. The Sequoia Healthcare District Board approved a large investment
under their "Healthy Schools Initiative" to fill the critical need for children to be physically
active during the school day. The Parks, Recreation and Community Services
Department and the Peninsula Covenant Community Center partnered last year to
provide a comprehensive physical education curriculum which proved to be very
successful. Comments from administrators at the School District include:
"This is the best thing to happen to this school in a long time... As long as I've been
here". Assistant Principal, Selby Lane School.
"It gives me peace of mind to know that we have these coaches here at Hawes. They
work so well with the kids." Principal, Hawes School.
"We're so happy to have you (PE+) here. These kids haven't had anything as
structured as this in a long time. They really need it and we're happy to have you."
Principal, Henry Ford School.
The benefit of a strong partnership between PCC and PRCS allows us to share
resources and curriculum knowledge, meet State standards, leverage School District
relationships, and build our youth outreach and wellness initiatives. The partnership will
also deploy physical fitness testing procedures this year as we have baseline data from
the past year.
ALTERNATIVES
The Council could choose not to sign the MOU thereby foregoing SHCD's award of
grant funding.
FISCAL IMPACT
The Sequoia Healthcare District has agreed to provide grant funds to the City which will
allow the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department to hire qualified staff,
provide program training to staff, and cover costs of equipment and miscellaneous
supplies related to the education, instruction, and promotion of the PE Plus program.
