7.1.F. - Page 1 <br /> RE PO RT <br /> To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br /> From the Cit Mana er <br /> October 7, 2013 <br /> SUBJECT <br /> City of Redwood City Proposed Sister City Relationship with Ciudad Guzman, Jalisco, <br /> Mexico <br /> RECOMMENDATION <br /> Approve the Agreement on Establishment of Sister City Relatioship between the City of <br /> Redwood City, California, United States of America, and Ciudad Guzman, Jalisco, <br /> Mexico <br /> BACKGROUND <br /> Redwood City International is a nonprofit organization currently promoting sister-city <br /> relationships between Redwood City, CA and Zhuhai, PRC and Colima, MX. Activities <br /> include hosting sister-city delegations, interns and other visitors; promoting international <br /> understanding as a member of Sister-City International; advancing cultural awareness <br /> in Redwood City's sphere of influence; and visiting China and Mexico as ambassadors <br /> from Redwood City. <br /> More recently, Redwood City International (RCI) has been exploring the possibility of <br /> establishing a new sister city relationship with Ciudad Guzman, a city in the state of <br /> Jalisco, Mexico. Connie Guerrero, Director at-Large of Redwood City International, had <br /> been in communication with the government of Jalisco concerning their interest in <br /> starting a cultural center and scheduling various events in Redwood City. <br /> As a result of those conversations, earlier this year the idea of a possible new sister city <br /> in Jalisco came to the forefront. Under the leadership of Director Guerrero, a sub- <br /> committee of the RCI Board was convened to review the organization's sister city <br /> criteria and determine if establishing a new sister city would be beneficial at this time. <br /> The sub-committee identified Ciudad Guzman as a candidate and brought the <br /> recommendation to the RCI Board in May 2013. The Board unanimously agreed that a <br /> formal sister city relationship with Cuidad Guzman should be pursued. <br /> ANALYSIS <br /> A summary matrix of the sister city evaluation criteria is attached. The RCI Board feels <br /> that Ciudad Guzman is very well-suited in meeting the criteria for consideration as a <br />
