ident
rDale Redwood City International (RCI) has been investigating the possibility of establishing a sister
identEl city relationship with Ciudad Guzman,Jalisco, Mexico; and a collaboration with Federacion
' 7"°'' Jalisco. RCI Director Connie Guerrero first mentioned Jalisco's interest in Redwood City to the
RCI Board in January 2013. Connie reported that she had been in communication with
Federacion Jalisco, and that they were very interested in starting a cultural center in
Redwood City and scheduling various events within the city.
It is important to note that Federacion Jalisco took the first step to approach Director
Preside Guerrero and RCI. This speaks greatly to their interest, desire, and initiative to partner with
"aPie'` Redwood City. Through this organization Jalisco wants to work in,and with, Redwood City.
xepres They intend to run a cultural center within the city and have already begun fund raising
,raz,a c activities in the community.
Ec'ro Under the leadership of Director Guerrero,an exploratory committee was formed to discuss
LG
,AguZ,„ and identify a potential sister city in Jalisco. Using RCI's criteria for adding sister cities, the
'FYZSh committee identified Ciudad Guzman as a candidate and brought the recommendation to the
GtarZ RCI Board in May 2013. A summary matrix of the evaluation criteria appears below. Ciudad
Gibson
,te Gue,, Guzman is located approximately 90 minutes south of Guadalajara, and 60 minutes north of
:xotiva, Colima. It is a city of about 100,000 people. The sister city partnership will strengthen
;iLaBe; business links,tourism;and educational,economical,cultural,social,and sporting
tc1e1 partnerships. Ciudad Guzman is an educational magnet around the west of the country.
tePaj1za Normal Education Centre(CREN)one of the first schools in the country, the cradle of great
°Radd"v"e'o teachers who educate children and youth today in all states of the Republic, has degrees in
i Uccelli
;,,a,hu,;, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education and Special Education. It also has the
University Center South, network college of the University of Guadalajara with 12 degrees,
Technological Institute of Ciudad Guzman, the UNIVER,and the National Pedagogical
University, also recognized internationally. Ciudad Guzman is working hard to bring modern
resources to its residents, and while historically the main economy of the city has been
agriculture, forestry, and livestock;they are making advances in technology and start-up
businesses. There are a large number of Redwood City residents who are originally from the
state of Jalisco. Ciudad Guzman also has a sister city relationship with Colima, Mexico—
Redwood City's present port sister city. Federacion Jalisco is facilitating the following:
• Teacher transfer programs
• Connecting businesses via the Chamber of Commerce and other business groups
• Promote physical, intellectual, social, and cultural development via collaboration in
different educational,sports,and health programs
