7.�.F. - Pag@ 5 .ation of Sister City Relationship with Ciudad Guzman,Jalisco, Mexico <br /> In 1998 when the City Council formalized the sister city relationship with Colima,it was recognized that Redwood <br /> City would be building relationships with various communities within the region and not just one single city. City <br /> Council Minute Order 98-030 from January 26, 1998 records the approval of a formal sister city relationship"... <br /> with Colima, Mexico and neighboring cities." <br /> In May 2013,the RCI Board was very excited to hear about the genuine interest coming from Jalisco and Ciudad <br /> Guzman to collaborate and partner with Redwood City,and was impressed that Federacion Jalisco took the first <br /> step in reaching out to the Redwood City community. The unanimous consensus was to continue the pursuit of a <br /> formal sister city relationship. <br /> Between May and July 2013,several conversations took place between RCI and Ciudad Guzman. Ciudad Guzman is <br /> very interested in having a sister city relationship with Redwood City,and would love to have such a relationship in <br /> place before their Redwood City festival later this year. In July 2013,the RCI Board of Directors unanimously <br /> passed a motion to authorize an official letter of invitation from RCI to Ciudad Guzman to form a sister city <br /> relationship with RCI and the City of Redwood City. RCI is currently planning to have a delegation visit Ciudad <br /> Guzman mid October. <br /> . . . - . . .. . <br /> Screening Criteria(sister city should haveJ: <br /> Program of higher education Normal Education Centre(CREN), University of Guadalajara <br /> University Center South,Technological Institute of Ciudad <br /> Guzman, UNIVER,and National Pedagogical University <br /> Port While Ciudad Guzman is not a port city itself,it does have a sister <br /> relationship with Colima, Mexico--RCI's present port sister city. <br /> RCI Board agreed that all of the other well-matched criteria <br /> outweighed this single criterion in this case. <br /> Cultural programs Nicknamed "Athens of Jalisco" because it is the birthplace of <br /> several well-known intellectuals and artists. The city also hosts the <br /> annual festival honoring San Jose. <br /> Population of sufficient size to maintain Population of 100,000. <br /> support <br /> Assessment for Success: <br /> Local resident connection Significant Redwood City population from the state of Jalisco. <br /> Local business interest Federacion Jalisco is establishing operations in Redwood City and <br /> building business relationships. <br /> Local educational interest The intent is to build relationships between local schools and <br /> those within Ciudad Guzman and Jalisco. <br /> Local heritage group Federacion Jalisco is creating a cultural center in Redwood City. <br /> Local interest in culture RCI and building relationships with Federacion Jalisco and Ciudad <br /> Guzman. <br /> Evaluation Criteria: <br /> Presence of a number of interested local Members of Federacion Jalisco and RCI are interested in forming a <br /> populace or interest group sister city committee to maintain the relationship between the <br /> two cities and their citizens. <br /> A sufficient level of energy Ciudad Guzman,Jalisco,and RCI are eager to finalize the <br /> partnership in the October timeframe. <br /> RCI readiness to partner Because of the proactive engagement by Federacion Jalisco, RCI is <br /> excited to see the partnership formalize. <br /> Sincerely, <br /> Kevin Bondonno,Secretary <br /> for <br /> Warren Dale, President <br />
