Discussion of Economic Development Strategy; (403) <br /> REPORT: Redevelopment Agency Executive Director Church, July 29, 1996; <br /> Sedway Kotin Mouchly Group's Report: Redwood City Business <br /> Attraction, Retention and Expansion Study, May 13, 1996. <br /> 1. Brief presentation by the Chamber/City Committee that developed the strategy; <br /> John Lee, Redwood City/San Mateo County Chamber President described the work <br /> of the Committee over the last 1.5 years, the broad range of participants, and the <br /> Committee's desire to go forward and put the strategy into practice. He urged <br /> "expediency with due diligence." President Lee said the strategy would bring big <br /> benefits to the City and encouraged the Council "to move forward now." <br />- Pat Webb, Chairperson of the Chamber/City subcommittee, described the original <br /> impetus for economic development which began in February 1984 when the Board <br /> launched an Economic Development Strategy. She said those goals remained the <br /> same today and she described the comprehensive research and study that was done to <br /> develop the proposed plans and strategy. Ms. Webb also urged the Council to take <br /> action on the strategy, particularly the auto mall!c1uster component. <br /> Jack Greenalch, former Redwood City Mayor and member of the Economic <br /> Development Strategy subcommittee, described the four parts of the plan, six program <br /> goals and the programs designed to accomplish those goals of the Strategy. Mayor <br /> Greenalch focused on six essential parts of the strategy: I) business attraction and <br /> retention; 2) streamline permits and decrease regulations; 3) services of an <br /> ombudsman; 4) a staff member dedicated to economic development; 5) expand store <br /> ITont improvement program; 6) and expand the Internet page. <br /> 2. Brief overview of the structure of the Strategy by the consultant, Sedway Kotin <br /> Group, with particular emphasis on the definition of target industries; <br /> Amy Herman, Sedway Kotin Mouchly Group, Economic Development Strategy <br /> consultant, described the process which led to a very professional document.
